Vega Rumors

Those are called market fluctuations hardly enough to call a crash. What is likely to cause a crash is when people realize these currencies have absolutely zero capital to back them up, but I don't want ot belabor the point as i am sure that will derail the thread more than normal. lol

You call them fluctuations I am repeating what other outlets have called it.

To mockingbird,

I don't fully blame mining for the shortage of cards, AMD may not have had enough produced or over exaggerated launch supplies. There should have been more stock and stores could limit purchases to 1-2 cards per home (limits initial large purchases to miners/scalpers).

To help Video card side if things... Not calling for a full cleaning, but they do need to evaluate several departments...

Even AMD got tired of waiting for VEGA

"cost increas(e) at build level"

Giving them the benefit of the doubt, if AMD cant' supply chips as fast as expected the lower quantities drive up prices.

For example, if non-reoccuring costs are fixed at $100,000 for anything from 1-50,000 units (just an example). That's $100 a unit at 1,000 units or $2 a unit at 50,000. So if their forecasts drop, to maintain margins they have to up the price.

Or they are just price gouging. I mean, I would if I was running the business. I still have no idea why people feel entitled to everything and now a specific price? This just tops the cake.

AMD has to be a fun place to work. Could you imagine being RTG and seeing this?

RTG used Intel procs showing off some of the Fury builds a couple of years ago.

They use the best CPU + Best GPU (as long as one of the two is AMD) to show off the products in the best light.

Nah I thought the same thing at first then I realized it is designed to be used with 3x cheaper power supplies. With so many slots available on a single board miners are inclined to further reduce voltages/clocks per card with custom BIOS for better efficiency.

It's normal for prices to be inflated at launch, here in italy i can find Vega 64 for close to 900 euros

That's not the point though, as it stands based on statements from GN, Ocuk etc, AMD's stated MSRPs were factoring in a rebate. At no point to did AMD state that this rebate was in effect. Retailers were selling at those prices because the rebate enabled them to, in the absence of it they cannot.

This is not the same as usual launch inflation.

Neither is it comparable to the added cost of FE cards from NV...

If NV had launched the 1080 for 599$, but in truth it could only be sold at 599$ for as long as Nvidia maintained a 100$ rebate for retailers, then it is effectively a 699$ part on a short term launch discount.

Jesus christ if nvidia had done that all of these hardware forums + reddit would have exploded

The end result is the cards were reviewed considering a 100$ lower price point.

This is like going to a car dealer and believing them when they try to tell you the MSRP includes any manufacturer rebates and that there is no possible way they can take less for the car....

Best Buy had stock earlier. Next week may ease supply as the Vega 56 comes in. Starting to see RX 580 coming in Stock too.

not when the card costs $100 more lol

somebody needs to look up the definition for Free at AMD.

Seems like AMD has NOT raised MSRP and it's more supply/demand issues. Sounds like there should be a good supply of vegas available this week. Shady retailers gonna be shady.
I'm crazy tired right now. If I understood that article, AMD themselves did not jack the price up, the e-tailers did. Is that sounding right? If so, sounds like we should/better be seeing a crapload of apology videos on Youtube from the reviewers there who lost their everlovin' shit over all this and basically told AMD to go eat a shit sammich. Jayz being one for sure.

Well you could still blame AMD for not having the inventory to meet demand (despite previous positioning saying otherwise).

Well you could still blame AMD for not having the inventory to meet demand (despite previous positioning saying otherwise).

That and mining demand- which AMD cannot satisfy, and can't really risk increasing production to satiate- mean that retailers are simply going to ignore MSRP. And they mostly get away with it.

I was just listening to the Pcper podcast, they were talking about RX Vega and pricing difficulties. Listening to it, I noted the way Ryan Shrout talked about the rebates from AMD. If you read the GN article, the statements from OCUK, you can see a sort of blame game on AMD. AMD sold the chips too high, AMD let the rebates expire, AMD did not have enough supply. All true except the cost of the chips, we will never know that cost. Ryan Shrout, the way he talked about the rebates, it's in a much more even matter, framed more as a well meaning attempt to get some cards sold at MSRP, with AMD essentially paying the retailers some amount of money to cover the increase over MSRP. But we know, AMD can't really afford to pay rebates on every card. TBH I doubt anyone (Nvidia, AMD)would/could want to pay to cover the rise due to mining demand. (And they don't)

And so the cards go up in price. Honestly, I think some of the fire came from the Gibbo post and let's be realistic here. The retailers don't want the blame for "price gouging" any more than AMD wanted this situation.

But what is AMD gonna do? Declare MSRP loudly and essentially blame retailers? Or watch angry customers ask where's the MSRP again? No, the statement they issued hedged against making false promises about prices, while also keeping retailers happy.

I'm not saying AMD is not to blame. Ryan backs up the fact of lack of supply and I'm sure that is a big factor. And a lot of the vitriol stems from a shitty launch. But jumping to AMD is tricking us on MSRP and review pricing, it's too early to declare it.

Wait a month or two, see how 56 launches, more stock comes in before getting the pitchforks.

I'm going to open a pitchfork store in the meantime with limited time rebates for AMD Vega (prospective) customers

From the link:

We spoke to a source close to AMD who is very knowledgeable about the matter and were finally able to get a solid answer. The first thing I was told was that the original launch MSRPs from AMD have not changed, however the company did run into a serious supply block causing retailers and e-tailers to hike prices due to demand.

That is NOT the point. No one claims that AMD MSRP is changing. What is being claimed (and confirmed by several serious sites) is that AMD gave TWO MSRP: one of $499 for the card alone and other of $599 for the card plus the 'free' games bundle.

raja_koduri_and_scott_herkelman_-_radeon_rx_vega-49.png

What serious sites are claiming is that the $499 MSRP for the card alone was only a launch offer, and that once it finished, everyone will be forced to purchase the pack of card-plus games at $599.

Stores have confirmed that they did sell the $499 card-alone until out of existences and then no longer could purchase the card alone, being forced to purchase the $599 pack, which they cannot sell to $499 unless loosing money.

You do know that AMD doesn't get game keys for free. The "bundle" is supposed to raise the price of the card in a manner that only a gamer would want to buy it. What miner would want to intentionally pay $100 more for games? A gamer who doesn't have those games would want them. Thus the card "should" fall into the hands of a gamer than a miner. That's the rationale behind the bundles.

I believe that AMD said that the $499 cards will be back in stock also. Now will Gibbo and other retailers actually sell those cards for $499 or will they mark them up to $699 and beyond? AMD sets the MSRP, but they aren't responsible for what Overclockers UK actually charges though for example. NewEgg can charge $1,500 a card if they want to if they have customers that are willing to pay that much.

Then when purchasing the Packs, you are getting free games you are paying for those games and 100 bucks is kinda buying those games at retail prices!

AMD has two prices, SEP and MSRP, the MSRP is for everyone that is not on their special list of etailers, for those people the MSRP is 599 for the standalone card, for the special etailers, its 499 for the standalone card

Everyone get that? They are screwing us over if you want to buy from lets say a mom and pop store, or walmart, or best buy.

We have no idea if the rebates ran out or AMD is bringing them back because the special etailers are pissed off for not getting enough supply of the $499 rebate cards, since they are special and no one else can get those rebates, they were probably expecting a certain amount to drive sales and that didn't happen. So essentially AMD pissed them off too.

Dumb move by AMD, now they are going to alienate certain retailers as well.

So now if you start seeing $599 from Amazon and Newegg for stand alone cards that is them price hiking it. If you see that in Best Buy, or any other retail local store, that is MSRP.

Now how many people think AMD's rebates were a limited time for those special etailers? And how many people believe those rebates were planned to be ongoing for the life time of rx Vega?

I would bet my money this is a cause and effect of pissed off special etailers..... as they were expected something, a certain amount of volume sales for the stand alone SEP cards, and that didn't happen, so AMD was forced to do ongoing rebates.

Sure, but AMD wouldn't advertise the games pack as "free", because people is paying $100 for them.

Don't try to pass the problem to retailers and stores. OCUK and others confirmed they couldn't get the cards at the $499 price, once they sold all the initial stock, and confirmed AMD had originally planned $499 only as a launch offer, valid for limited time.

Sorry but BestBuy is selling the SAME $599 game bundles that NewEgg and Gibbo have raised the price to the stratosphere. Bestbuy is sticking with AMD's MSRP. It makes NewEgg and others look like crooks for overcharging customers that are desperate for a card.

The truth is that Capitalism says that NewEgg is perfectly correct to raise the prices because customers are willing to pay it.

Here is a link to Bestbuy's Vega 64 cards. Notice that they have normal pricing. Sorry I'm not buying Gibbo's lies.

Sure, but AMD wouldn't advertise the games pack as "free", because people is paying $100 for them.

It was created to give customers that want to play games on their cards value. Many people who actually play video games want to play those games. You can call them bundles, bundled, connected, value packs, synergy packs, whatever. In the end it is to give value to the customer that they are pursuing.

Go tell the miners to stop buying AMD video cards and all of this bundling wouldn't have to exist. Until that happens, AMD has decided to become more creative with their marketing to get the cards into the hands of people that actually play games.

Best Buy and other retailers can't get the SEP pricing. They can't get the rebated cards.

That is straight from AMD, that is exactly what they stated, only certain etailers get the SEP stand alone cards.
