vCenter Server up and running

Finally got vCenter Server up and running and attached my host. Very cool stuff here.

I am running vCenter Server from Server 2008 running on a Virtualbox VM but thinking about putting it on a VM on my ESXi host.

I am on a roll, this past week I have learned a lot. Now I am going to work on Physical to Virtual conversion and then the update manager server.

Fun stuff, the one reason to keep you vcenter server off of the ESXi host is that when you start using update manager to update the host, the host will need to be in maintenance mode which requires the VM's are shut down or suspended. Thus leaving you no way to install updates on the host. What is the warning on the host for?

Also some things to keep in mind for p2v, the newer versions 4.x do not support 2000 physical hosts, you will need to install a 3.x standalone version on a different machine or on the 2000 physical host, also you cannot push the agent to 2008 with UAC enabled so I typically create a share with the 4.x standalone to perform a local install on the 08 servers.

The warning is because I have IPMI disabled, see the other threads here about that problem.

Is the update manager a server you install on windows like the vCenter server?

Update manager is an extension of vCenter, you will have another tab once you install it.

Right, you install it first on the vCenter server, then you can install the plugin for your workstation as well.
