Been looking for a solution to monitor, diagnose, alert, and offer capacity prediction. Noticed VMware offered vCenter Operations and wanted to know if anyone here is using it and what your thoughts are about vCenter Operations.

I'm currently using vFoglight and some of the stuff on it I like, while other info in it doesn't seem to be right.

At any rate looking for thoughts about vCenter Operations.
 
Love vCOPs. With the Advanced pack you get vCenter Operations and CapacityIQ. vCOPs will look at your environment and calculate what is normal..workload, health, and trending capacity. Over time it gets a really good idea of what a VM, host, or cluster is doing at that time of day, on that day of the month and if things deviate too much it will alert. It's very useful should you hit a performance problem as it quickly lets you see what is constraining a VM or host. With all that it also tracks changes and events. the Standard and Advanced editions look at vCenter events, Enterprise lets you pull in events from almost any other system. So if you see an anomaly or problem you can overlay events on a timeline with the system graphs to see what triggered that change.

CapIQ is used for detailed capacity planning and doing what-if analysis. When will I run out of datastore space? Memory? CPU resources? What happens if I deploy 30 more VMs that look like this, this, and this? What happens if I remove a host from the cluster? Very good.

VMware is running a really good deal right now. If you buy vCOPs Advanced by the end of the year you get vCOPs Enterprise v5 when it releases in Q1. Advanced is $125/VM list price and Enterprise is $195/VM list. There are additional licenses for Enterprise if you want to pull in or monitor non-virtual things.

Big fan of it.
 
sweet tool, my only complaint is the sheer amount of resources it noms :p
