Backstory:
At work, we've got a production cluster of 6 hosts, labeled esx2-7. (1 is the vCenter Server). This cluster has DRS set to "Fully Automated" and HA enabled. The cluster was basically full. We were between 96GB and 128GB of RAM short should one of the boxes fail - Our needs exceeded our capacity. Well, one of the boxes showed an amber light - DIMM warning. We need to pull it, reseat it, and keep an eye on it. This obviously means bringing one of the hosts down. Thankfully, an identical box was freed up by another project. We tossed ESXi on it, added it to the cluster, and waited for DRS to start relieving pressure on the other hosts.

Well, we're still waiting. Not a single migration has occurred to the new host. I can see the VMs being moved around to the other hosts, but the new, unused host is sitting there without a single freaking VM on it.

I intended to put the host which needs maintenance into maintenance mode, and let DRS vMotion the VMs off it, but right now I'm wondering if DRS is even working right. Isn't it supposed to perform load balancing? Why would it ignore the new host? Will I need to go through and manually move every VM off esx3 onto esx8? If I do, how do I tell DRS not to consider esx3 as a host that it can move VMs to?

My first thought is that the new host is not being managed by the VCenter server/wasn't added, but I could be way wrong. If it's not added HS/DRS will not run from my understanding. The host is treated like a standalone host.

How many VMs need to be moved? Could you use an anti-affinity rule for this?

About 50 VMs need to be moved. I'm not familiar with an "anti-affinity rule". Care to enlighten me?

I just had a thought... Does the ESXi evaluation license allow for vMotion? We haven't put the new license in yet, as I'm waiting on another guy to send it to me.

Yes ..it's Enterprise Plus. Did you try to manually complete a vMotion to make sure everything works? vMotion network configured properly..etc? Any faults when you click the DRS tab?

I haven't yet. I'll probably try that soon. I also noticed while poking around that the network didn't get set up the same way as the other hosts have it set up. Is that something that the Cluster's supposed to handle, or does it require manual intervention?

You SHOULD configure the ESXi host manually or with host profile..etc prior to joining it to the Cluster. Do you have too? No...but if you want it to work...you bet your a$$...lol...

You will need to setup the network the way it should be. The cluster won't handle that for you.

In regard to affinity/anti-affinity rules this should help.

Well, balls. I screwed that up. How bad would it go if I tried to mimic the networking configuration of the other hosts manually? Or is there a way to export a "template" of the working host, and apply it to the non-working host?

Just do it manually, it literally takes all of 10 minutes....plus it will be a good learning exercise!!:) You can do Host Profiles..need Enterprise Plus, but that still requires you to input network addresses..etc.

You can also view a map to see if Vmotion will occur correctly, etc. I think it's VCenter maps? (Someone confirm this for me, please.)

Well, damn. Looks like we have Enterprise, not Enterprise Plus. No Host Profiles for me. I set it up manually. Now I need to drive down to the office to plug in six network cables which somehow weren't plugged in, and get the network guys to assign them to the right VLANs.
