VC UPGRADE, IS IT WORTH IT?

I'm now running a Gainward gf5900xt and am fairly happy with it, but I'm starting to get the upgrade itch. i was wondering if a 6600GT is a big enough jump in performance to justify spending money, or would I need to go to the 6800? I searched the "guide" sticky at the top of the forum, but it didn't mention this. Any help is greatly appreciated. :D
 
Yes it would be a huge upgrade, but why upgrade if your happy with your current card?
 
I think you should upgrade. Hell I have a 6800GT right now and I'm thinking of upgrading to X850 just because I have nothing better to do and money to spend.

5900 to 6800GT would be quite a jump.. could be twice as fast!

But whether an upgrade will make a difference for you depends on the rest of your system specs. Ie. If your processor and ram is not up to snuff, your new graphics investment would be bottlenecked!

i'd hold out for a bigger upgrade than that

agreed. i wouldn't get anything lower than a 6800. If you game a lot on newer games, shoot for the 6800GT. not that much more than a 6800 but a hell of a lot faster.
 
I'm sorry it wasn't in there but I'm pondering putting something like this in there as well.

who recently had to downgrade from a 6600GT to an FX 5200 card to pay bills....

I don't have THAT much... enough to buy a x850 if I sell my 6800gt. That's rough though... :( I'd probably go hungry before making that big of a downgrade

My cpu is an Athlon(Barton) 2500 OC'd to a 3200, and I have 1GB of RAM. I'm running XP Pro on a WD 200GB SATA drive. Thanks for all your help. More input appreciated :)
 
your best bet is to get a 6800 non ultra.

try looking up a BFG 6800 OC - as it comes overclocked out of the box , has a copper heatsink w/ 2 fans and heatpipes.

its 12 pipes and 5 vertex shaders and has the chance of unlocking to 16 pipes and 6 vertex shaders.

i dont know.. but ive heard outpost.com has them for 199.

but yes.. a 6600GT would be a good upgrade esp if you plan on running any directx9 games.

QFT. Your CPUmight not be powerful enough to use the full potential of one of the 6800 ultra, but it would certainly benefit from this upgrade! BFG is a great choice thanks to their lifetime warranty.
 
Honestly, I would say no. I went from a FX5900XT to 6800GT and it was the minimum I personally considered. There have been like three threads here lately asking the same question and I've given the same answer. Go for a bigger upgrade or wait.

I played both HL2 and D3 all the way through with both cards now so you know where I am making my opinion from.
 
A 6600GT won't be a big upgrade from a 5900XT. I personally went from a 6600GT to a 6800GT and the difference was huge with high AA and AF. The largest difference I think was that the 6600GT flounders when it comes to 1600x1200 in games, especially with AA and AF enabled. The 6800GT should be the minimum to consider if you game at those resolutions.

The 6800 is your best bang for the buck, a 6800GT or 6800Ultra will be more satisfying. The difference between a 6600GT and a 5900XT isn't earth shattering. So I woulnd't bother.
 
6600GT is plenty enough to play any game out jsut fine. I have one on work rig and it palys everythign I toss at it.
