Vast difference in speeds..

So running speed tests (speedtest.net) on both my desktop and my girlfriends notebook yield majorly different results. The notebook is consistant at 15+Mb/s, while the desktop jumps around from .5-3Mb/s range. Testing both in the same room, actually put the notbook on top of the desktop to rule out any kind of signal blockage.

Network devices are as follows:
Router- Linksys WRT54G v.2
Desktop (Windows 7)- Linksys WMP54G v4.1
Notebook (Windows Vista)- Atheros AR5007EG

Any ideas? Does the WMP54G card just suck?

Have you... made sure you have the latest drivers for the desktop? I quick google search found people having problems with drivers, etc for that card in Win 7. Also, have you tried a wired connection between the PC and the router?
