Vantec Tornado RPM?

Just fitted a Vantec Tornado... the RPM reading in Asus Probe is only about 2500, but it says 4800 on the box? Anyone have any ideas? My old CPU fan showed up as 4500rpm.

Is it possible it could have been modified to run a bit slower/quieter? I got it used from ebay. It is pretty loud though, so I doubt it.

Nevertheless, it seems to be doing the trick.. load temperatures down another 2 or 3 degrees.
 
could be volt modded to 5vs. take a picture of the wires and post em up here. the nados only read rpms at 12v's and 5v's, it wont do it at 7's so im thinking its 5v's
 
Well to start with, you sure its ok to plug that in your motherboard? Im not sure of the power usage of them, but i know motherboards dont tend to support very high wattage on the fan headers. My Abit AV8 only supports up to 5W fans on the fan headers for example.

I know alot of Asus board use that Q-Fan (or whatever its called) too, which sets the fan rpm based on cpu temps. You should be able to disable this in the BIOS.
 
I have it hooked up to one of the fan-only molex connectors on my antec truepower 430w. It has a seperate 1-wire connector for the rpm detection.

It doesn't look as if it's been tampered with, the fan itself is all sealed so there's no easy way to get into it. The wiring on the connectors looks fine as far as I can tell
 
is the 1 pin detector in, can you take a pic of the connector or tell me if there are any different color wires connecting when you plug the fan in. like red to black and yellow to red?

Yes, the 1-pin rpm detector is in the cpufan connector on my board.
 
I think I've found the problem :) When I connect it to one of the normal (not "fan-only") molex connectors it's loud as hell and blows a lot more air... Just going to test the rpm monitor now

I assume it's safe to connect the fan to one of these? I'm guessing the fan only ones aren't getting enough juice

(edit)... yep, that's it reading 4800 rpm now. Think I might drop back down to the slower speed though, everything was running cool enough and I don't know if I can take this noise :)
 
fan only connectors are supposed to run the fan at slower rpm's and only speed up when you need additional cooling. They arent supposed to run full power on fan only. Its "smart" control.
 
I see. Sounds good.
I decided it wasn't worth running the fan at 4800 the whole time, was only about a couple of degrees cooler. Just overkill really.

well.. the FAN ONLY molex will give out 5V until the temp of the PSU reached 43C where it'll operate at 12V...

(tested with digital multimeter for the FAN ONLY molex... the cross over temp was listed in the manual/box)
