Vanguard has finally release a trail island as a demo for the game. With AoC and Warhammer catering to the PVP crowd Vanguard strong point is PvE (PvP available but don't expect much). They have amazing dungeons and if you like the old fashion dungeon crawls this is the game. The character classes are well done and it is more role based than the other games. It runs pretty smoothly with all the work they have done on the engine. The population is very small compared to the big boys and hopefully that will pick up with the new demo.

Trail isle will get you to level 10 and is a seperate area than the "real" game. If you are looking for a PvE game give it a try and you might be pleasantly surprized.

The game play is indeed interesting, but the graphical artistic-ness of beyond awful. Nothing flows together in terms of textures and the entire world has a bland color scheme. I played in the beta, for a few months after, and about a month ago. The game certainly has improved in terms of performance, but the epic feeling that was promoted at release has fallen apart with the addition of riftways. Although I'm not saying they aren't helpful at times. I guess I would recommend it to someone who wasn't too worried about graphics and wanted an "Interesting" pve game with a large world and a huge variety of classes/races.

Graphics are always an interesting discussion. I personally like the graphics/artistic design. I love how if you come over a rise and see a mountain in the distance you can get to it and see what is there, the scope is amazing. I like how the 3 continents each has their own design. At first I thought that that the desert one was weak but after spending a lot of time there I love the feel and look of it.

But just like WOW's graphics you will find people that like it and people that don't.

I can't find anywhere to download the trial. Nothing on the main site.

*update*

Found developer forum post that said the stand-alone will be available next week. It will weigh in around 1GB download sized, 2.5GB installed.

Quite good for an MMO. Feels like the spiritual successor and true sequel of EQ1. I'm up to a level 40 disc. Somewhere along the way (late 20's) I finally realized there were so many amazing, diverse locales, dungeons and what not with true character and relevance (well, beyond the whole mmo genre standby where everything respawns and such) that I started taking screens. Caught some good ones scattered in here but its really just everyday adventuring ~ the sights really vary and there are a lot of unique experiences to be had all over.

I was in pretty early beta all the way up to release, and from looking at those screens it seems the game is just as bland looking as it was then.

Just a word of warning. The trial areas for SWG and EQ 2 were MUCH better than the actual game. I am sure vanguard is the same.

I tried the trial, meh. I think for PVE LOTRO is the way to go, expansion is amazing.

The trial is really just a tutorial. A couple small islands, one dungeon, quests that progressively teach you how to do things.

The game is really about exploring all the different areas and especially dungeons all over the real world. Which by the way, are nicely spread out across all levels, not just 50. You can find massive, relevant dungeons and areas to explore as early as you want, all throughout the level range and up to the top.
