Valve's High Dynamic Range

this implmentation of HDR is more about changing the exposure as a person looks up at the sun or into a shadow...to simulate your eyes adjusting to different light levels...so taking a screenshot doesn't really show anything...

it shows the bloom of the HDR but you are right, it doesn't show the iris effect, you can only see that in motion

DoD source is gorgeous to me... i just wish i could get a steady rate of 50+ fps with my rig on it though.

yeah, basically this screenshot just isn't really showing anything...I don't know why they chose to post that particular image...

The bloom effect is pretty apparent there, if you've ever been to the beach on a sunny day, you should recognize it right away. ;)
The HDR image looks quite a bit more realistic to me.

The bloom effect is very apparent (ie: less detail and sharpness for textures while blooming is taking place; simulates the eyes squinting or adjusting from bright sun light). The lighting looks amazing. There is less banding along the top of the rifle with HDR, for instance.

Yeah...HDR definitely looks much better in Brent's shots. Not sure what the original poster was doing in his HDR shot...but that looks worse.

Bloom, not Full HDR

It just brightens things up and doesn't look very good IMO

Looks good to me. Since its a changing effect I doubt you can screenshot it.

I enjoy it.

i like full HDR plus i get aobut 10 more FPS then no HDR, but i cant see jack! line in donner, i cant see thru the windows cause its so damn bright!

Ok, call me goofy, but why is simulating something as craptacularly annoying as blooming actually a good thing?

Boy am I glad it's just an option. I wish I could turn it off in real life. :D

i'm confussed.. i thought you can't enable AA with HDR? please someone correct me :)

If it's HDR done through shaders, AA can be used. If it's OpenEXR, then the HDR acceleration is being done by the FPU, which keeps the FPU from doing AA. At least thats how I understand it.

HDR is about 20x to exaggerated in the games. It ridicules. Just go outside. I can't wait for devs. to stop hyperventilating over this new gimmick and start using it sanely. Oddly enough, the only time I have ever see HDR in real life like it is in games now, is when I hyperventilated at the pool from forgetting to breath. Then I passed out and dreamed I was on a forum discussing the crappines of HDR.
