Hi ,

Im not sure if you might have allready seen this ( if you have don't post to say you have ) but i think it might be worth a look at .

From Combat Zone

Valve has unveiled 64-bit Source gaming technology developed in conjunction with AMD, available now is Half-Life 2 and Lost Coast 64-bit versions.

Valve, a leading entertainment and technology studio, unveiled a 64-bit version of its Source game engine technology today. The first 64-bit Valve games released will be native 64-bit versions of Half-Life 2 and Lost Coast, and have been developed to take advantage of AMD Athlon(tm) 64 FX processor-based systems - the ultimate 64-bit gaming platform for PC enthusiasts.

The 64-bit versions of these games are being offered to all Half-Life 2 owners via SteamTM, Valve's online platform for delivering games and digital content directly to users around the world.

"Bringing the Source technology to the AMD64 processor platform is an important step in the evolution of our game content and tools," said Gabe Newell, Valve's co-founder and president. "This investment in future processing will allow us, and third party developers working with Source, to push the boundaries of the gaming experience."

"AMD Athlon 64 FX processors are targeted for systems designed to provide the ultimate experience for a new generation of power users running demanding applications " said Bob Brewer, corporate vice president, Desktop Division, AMD's Microprocessor Solutions Sector. "Combining the performance of AMD64 processors

with the
64-bit version of Valve's technology results in advanced and powerful games. This winning collaboration brings customers an amazing product based on the best of AMD64 technology and Valve's software development."

The AMD Athlon 64 FX processor is the first Windows(r)-compatible 64-bit PC processor designed specifically for PC enthusiasts. The AMD Athlon 64 FX processor helps enthusiasts immerse themselves in their digital world. They can play games at a level previously only reserved for the world of simulations, or create and manipulate digital media like a pro. The AMD Athlon 64 FX processor brings the next generation of digital media and games to life.

Half-Life 2 has been named Game of the Year by over 35 publications worldwide, and has sold over 4 million copies worldwide. Source, Valve's proprietary engine technology, provides technical advances in rendering, artificial intelligence, character animation, and networking.

Just b/c FarCry didn't implement it properly doesn't mean all 64-bit computing is bad.

Yeah 64 bit source has been out for a while, only change I notice is that source clogs my event log with system errors that appear to have no effect on the game or my system.

wtf are you guys talking about, there was a definite performance boost in farcry WITHOUT the addon pack. with the addon pack,it made the majority of the textures much more "bumpy", which you can definitely see on the side by side comparisons.

I haven't had time to play the 64bit half life, but the 64 bit far cry (which i have played) was done well imo.

64bit isn't going to have any affect on graphics, the extra bumps and such in Farcry 64 was done by the team not the 64bit process.

Right now the 64 bit stuff is a lot of experimental things. It won't be perfected until a lot more computers are using 64 bit procs graphics cards.

GIve it another 6-8 months and I'm sure there will be a lot more 64 bit stuff coming out and the technology will improve.

I'll be eventually swapping over to the 64 bit Windows OS and then tunning all my games in 64 bit but I"m going to wait for more stuff to support it.

This post is Not about how 64 bit CPU's affect gaming . its about Valve offering a 64 bit version of the game to All owners of the Half life 2 game .

The 64-bit versions of these games are being offered to all Half-Life 2 owners via SteamTM, Valve's online platform for delivering games and digital content directly to users around the world.

Go take a look >>linky

lol don't be sorry , He is one of them people that only reads the titel of the thread and not the actual content ;)

We will ignore him and get on with the 64 bit version of HL2 :D

I think this is a nice touch on the part of valve as it promote's the furure of next gen gaming .

I wonder if other game developers will take the bull by the horn's and do the same ?

Lets face it its going to be a 64 bit future for all of us and maybe sooner than some of us would like to think , So by valve doing somthing like this maybe this will push others to do the same .

No, I wans't crapping I was stating a fact that shouldn't be overlooked when something cool like this is promised again.
I've been in the computer game a very long time and I have to say most anything that sounds great is BS (see Peter molyneux/windows 64-bit/Serious sam).
I will be the first to post back in here when I see prof not hype.
Good day and take care.

My brother is running a 64 bit OS and loves it. I'm partially setup for it with the proc, mobo and graphics card. All I'm lacking is the OS. But I'm waiting until more games support it.

I've seen my brother's rig with 64 bit and Far Cry 64 bit and I've gotta say, it looks damn good.

Ummm...the 64-bit increases performance not graphics.

Coffe , i don't dout your wisdom regarding all things PC ...I was just drawing attention to the fact that valve have been good enough to offer a 64bit version of the game .

I was not stating that 64 bit was good .. or bad , I just wanted people to know that a 64 bit version was being offered to people that allready had the original version .

Wether 64bit is good ... or bad is open to debate but not in this post .

You too have a good day ;)

I'm sorry for sounding like I wanted to crap and yes its a good news never the less.
AMD fan here :)

True that 64-bit increases performance but with the increased performance many companies find they are able to squeeze more detail, textures, and poly's into the environment, which is what they did in FarCry (as well as other 64-bit games that I know of). They increased view distances and upped many of the textures' details.

So while you are half right, you are thoroughly wrong and have been owned again in this thread. Now I say "Good Day!"

:p ;) :D
