What has valve been doing these days, are they cooking up something tasty? Ive always really enjoyed their games.

Yeah, producing sequels to critically-acclaimed (Portal won how many GOTY awards? 50?) and commercially successful games is always a bad idea.

Portal 2 and their Defense of the Ancients clone.

I don't think its a clone. It's the sequel of the game with the help of the developers (lol..? IceFrog shouldn't be getting all that praise). They are making a full fledged DOTA 2.

They are enjoying their fat paychecks and probably figuring out how to make ep 3 and Portal 2 shine.

"Valve doesn't plan on changing what DotA players are used to, with DotA 2 set to bring over DotA AllStars's 100+ hero roster, the same map, items, skills, and upgrade paths. In DotA 2, these aspects will only be freed from the constraints put on them by the WarCraft III engine thanks to the use of Valve's Source engine instead."

Valve is always slow to the market. They need to get more games out.

The minute Valve churns out games like Activision churns out CODs is the minute they start to suck.

Valve can take it's sweet ass time all it wants. Isn't Valve still privately owned? They have no stock holders to answer to.

Yeah? I never said anything about keeping the same formula. It IS DOTA 2 after all. I'm almost certain there will be new heroes etc, with better AI/Mechanics of course.

Generally speaking sequels suck. And I'm not sure how they can make Portal 2 a noticeable improvement over Portal, so yeah, I'd prefer if they made something new and awesome instead of trying to improve on something old and awesome.

last I heard valve was hard at work adding hundreds of useless novelty items to their extremely popular hat simulator, also known as tf2.

You're right about what you said, except that Valve is not just taking their time to get things right. They snoozing on some of their projects. They are sitting on potential and doing nothing with it meanwhile making hats and making left for dead 2 work with Mac.

Reddit put it best...

Yes...providing the final "episode" (if one can call it that after more than 3 years since the release of episode 2) to the franchise that made Valve what they are today, isn't really important...

I never said it isn't important.

Sure, but when you consider that their "episodic content" for HL2 BS involved the release of more content in less time, what you just said about "taking it's sweet ass" is kind of pushing it. Especially when Episode 2 was released more than 3 years ago! More than 3 years to develop a single episode, which if it's as lengthy as the other two, will be worth 4-5 hours of gameplay ? That's pretty pathetic...

Just put out fucking Episode 3............ please

That's the bottom line for those of us who make fun of Valve for taking too long. The longer they take the more unrealistic my expectations will be for the game. If it takes any longer I'll be a whiny crybaby no matter what they release. :D Actually, that wouldn't happen. I'll be a grumpy old man in my wheel chair in the nursing home mumbling some unintelligible rant about valve. :p

Word on the street is Valve has already finished the new HL and will be released in 2014. It's just the fact that they're waiting for hardware to catch up to be able to play it.

I'm just talking out of my ass.... would be nice to know though.

Valve has stated that saying they would be doing episodic releases was a mistake. I would not be suprised if the next half life installment is actual half life 3. As impatient as I am I would much rather wait for HL3 to be done when they get it done and have it be a fantastic game.

As to portal 2 being a sequal: First off portal 2 is reported to have a single player that is twice as long as the first, second they have added a whole bunch of cool new mechanics such as directable power beams, light bridges, bouncy goo and accelerating goo. That is not to mention a co-op mode which is also twice as long as the original portal and adds all kinds of new possibilities now that there are 2 people.
Also, consider Half life 2 was a sequel, that is not exactly what I would call a crappy game. Battlefield 2, sequel but good game, Mass Effect 2 sequel but good game. The problem is not that sequels are crappy games, the problem is when companies try to pump out a sequel in a a short period of time to capitalize on the brand name instead of taking the time to flesh it out as a full game.
