Valve delays Left 4 Dead

lol I read the title as "Valve delays left four dead" and was wondering how delayed software could kill people.

Anyway, on topic..at least the delay isn't *too* long.

One thing Valve is good at is delaying games, but they always delay for a good reason and the game is always better after the delay. I would rather it get delayed than have to install 5 patches in 2 months(I am looking at you EA)

The thing is, Valve gets some slack from doing this EVERY time, yet other good developers out there, that delay their game for the very same reasons stated by Valve to delay Left 4 Dead, are greeted with "rocks and stones" in the form of words. It boggles my mind and that's also why Valve keeps missing their own deadlines, Because they know people will still praise them for it.

When they delayed half life 2 for over a year, no one praised them for it, and no one bought the whole "someone stole our source code" line either.

Blizzard also releases games when they are ready, and are usually given praises for doing so.

Well, if the games being delayed by other developers were actually good, then it would be different. At least with a Valve game you know you're getting a great game almost every time. So a little delay isn't too big of a deal for most people. I know I am looking forward to this game, but having it delayed a few weeks to coincide with their first game release isn't too big of a deal for me.

A two week delay is no big deal. Considering release dates are generally meaningless anyways, most people won't even notice it was delayed.

I've spent the last two years or so thinking that I couldn't wait for L4D to come out. I would see a gameplay video and get all hyped up. Well, the wait has been too long! With every vid I see now, I feel less and less excited about it. I'm gonna wait a while to buy this one. I'll be busy playing Fo3 or GTA4 anyway

Good game developers often do this.

Also, it's only 2 weeks. Not really a big deal.

This is why I hate the business side of Valve. Creative side? Amazing. Business side? Doesn't give a FUCK. They'll give release dates months (years!) too early just to increase visibility of it, and have no problem delaying it again, and again, and again. They have no problems having the policy of not fixing their broken-ass "anti-cheat" and telling false positives they just need to buy another copy of the game, while actual cheaters run rampant. Fuck Valve's business and marketing divisions.

(<3 Valve art and dev teams though)

Personally I think its more for show to hit the anniversary. I do not think there is a true way to know a couple months ahead of time that you will need 2 more weeks.

That, and they may not have wanted to compete with Gears of War 2 coming out on the 360. Whatever the reason, a two or three week delay strikes me as more of a business decision than a QA or development issue.

It's because Valve always delivers. Valve is synonymous with polished games. If Valve says it needs more time in the oven, then most of us will give Valve the benefit of the doubt. Although two weeks sounds more like a distribution thing.

You are joking right ? You must be, because if you think the only quality games out there, are made by Valve...think again,

No, Valve doesn't always delivers. That's your POV. Ever since they started milking the HL2 franchise, with crappy episodes, Valve doesn't deserve any benefit of the doubt IMO.

When was the last time Valve released a game on the date they originally intended? Although this isn't a huge delay, they make great games and obviously don't like rush anything out. They might be better off adopting 3D Realm's moddo (When Its Done).

Even if they were "milking" the franchise as you put it, the episodes were polished and good quality. Just because you dont like the material, doesn't mean its unpolished material.

Polished and good quality, are too entirely different things. And I definitely argue with the quality part, since:

Episode 1 = 3-4 hours of escorting NPCs.
Episode 2 = 5-6 hours of going from one area to another, fighting off millions of enemies that appear out of nowhere, for an extremely large amount of time...

That's not good quality in my book. After playing Episode 2 at a friend's, I was very glad I didn't spend money on it.

thats your POV mate, i think that half life 2 rocked. So clearly this game aint your type and thus have no right to bash it just because you dont like it.

I like it, lots of other people like it.

I have no right to bash it, because I don't like it ?
So the only ones that can talk about a game, are those that like it ? Give me a break

And I wasn't talking about HL2, but rather the quality of its episodes.

I loved the episodes. I'm sure I'll love the 3rd when it comes. More HL2 goodness is fine with me, just wish they'd hurry it up. Great stories and gameplay.

If you dont like the type of content, or the quantity of content, fine, but dont say its not polished. Unpolished in my book means buggy, wont run, glitches in the story or environment, etc.

You may not like what they did, but you can't say it wasn't finished. Quantity of content <> quality of content.

Ugh, I hate to feed the troll here, but my comment was in response to "why does everyone give Valve slack when they delay?" You don't agree, thats just sthuper.

Seems like a years delay wasnt enough, they needed to delay it more, typical valve tbh.

Yea have every right to bash it. However, the vast majority of people seem to disagree with you. Get over it.

I'm pretty sure they only said it will be out when it's done until the last E3 where they finally gave a date. This date has moved 2 weeks. That's hardly reminiscent of anything you just said.

Heh, I had Halflife2 on pre-order for 2 something years.

Nearly shat a brick when Gamestop called letting me know it was in-stock (Completely forgot I had it on pre-order and paid in full 2 years earlier, and was about to go buy a new copy that day)

What's the point of preordering way before hand? Not like it's going to cheaper and steam users still get to play first.

Where did I say it was unpolished ??
