validating overclock on 6800GT

Hi All,
I'm about to take delivery of a pci-e 6800GT which I plan to overclock. Being new to this can someone tell me how I can check framerates in games like HL2 and Doom 3?

Also, is Rivatuner the best tool to use to overclock this card once it's installed?

or just change your agp settings in the bios ( to oc). But yeah, i think your best bet for checking frameters is in the actual game.
