My thoughts, take a computer, then place it into an airtight box of soem sort, and connect a vaccum to it. This will cause a vaccum enviornment like in space. Wouldnt this be the ultimate cooling technique.
 
and when you go to change out a part from the computer, releasing the vaccume will blow all the chips off your mobo as the air rushes back in, also how you plan on getting power, and video out of the mobo, the other thing is i dont think it would work that way, heat sinks work though convection, no air, no convection

keep in mind the wise man who said energy cannot be created or destroyed.. where does the heat end up going?
 
Vacuum is a very good insulator. So your components would be even hotter in vacuum than in air. What is supposed to convey the heat away from your components if you have no air flow?

Exactly. In a vacuum, there are less air molecules to absorb the heat from the heatsinks.
A household vacuum isn't going to create ANYWHERE near the vacuum found in space, and the vacuum in space isn't what creates the insane freezing tempuratures anyway.. right?

Yes, heat can only be transferred through matter, and in a vacuum, the heat cant go anywhere. Take much physics?

Why would one think a vacuum would be good for cooling? Maybe we aren't understanding your vision? Eh, not likely.

So, yes, there would be LESS, not none. In outer space, none.

less air molecules? u mean NO air molecules. right. a vacuum simply means no matter. it doesnt indicate no energy. u can have a vacuum a trillion times hotter than our sun.

heat is transferred in a vacuum. in the absence of matter it eminates in another form, forgive me i forgot the term, but it still spreads out to an area of less concentration, basically down the concentration gradient. however heat is transferred much more slowly in a vacuum.
 
ur screen name refers to Andrew Carnegie, Rockafeller and Morgan as the infamous robberbarrons? however Carnegie was really not a robber barron as he did give back immensely to his communities.

I actually believe that Rockafeller was an American hero, to be honest.


As for heat transfering in a vacuum, I can only think of heat energy being transmitted in radiation.

Perhaps infrared? I'm trying to find it and I can't. Though I'm pretty sure gamma rays can heat things up.

it had a name, it may be thermal radiation but i coulda swore it was something else. it has to be electromagnetic because thats the only type of wave to be able to travel without a medium.
 
scientists say butterflies can see ultraviolet light. What exactly do you think ultraviolet light looks like, without using any of the colors in our visible spectrum? thats too crazy to think about.

Theres no way anybody could try to describe it without comparing it to the colors in our spectrum. We know of nothing else. I'd guess it looks... different.
 
I think he means the vacuum cleaner not the vacuum itself... Big strong motor that probably unshielded. Im pretty sure its just infared radiation thats transmitted. Thats how space craft cool themselves, thermal radiators.

Like I already said, he said he was thinking of putting his computer in a chamber and hooking a VACUUM CLEANER up to it. There would be less molecules, not none.
 
ROFL. This is the silliest idea I've heard yet.

Space isn't cold because it's a vacuum. Space is cold because the only heat source is the sun, it's infinetely expanisve and heat sources are far and few, and there's no atmosphere to retain heat.

A vacuum means there's no air inside your computer. No air, means there is no where for the heat to go from your components aside from IR radiation which is very slow and happens anyway. No where for heat to go means heat stays in your components and your computer burns up. The end.
