hey guys, should i keep the stock intel hsf or put on my old v7+, I tried both and it seems like they both are about equal in performance. The intel fan is the one that comes with the p4 2.8e which is a pretty good fan. The intel fan is much quieter. What do you guys think? im guessing the v7+ could probably handle it better when there is a load on it.

id just keep the retail hsf. if your not doing any overclocking that will be perfect anyway

even if i did do overclocking, do you think the v7+ would work any better than the stock fan? The stock fan looks like it has a better heatsink. What about if I put a different fan on the volcano 7, a quieter one? If I could do that which fan should i put?

Yeah, I'm gonna have to throw in a vote for the Intel HSF here. After having a V7+ myself I know that it really isn't capable of anything outstanding and isnt worth the extra noise it takes to get halfway decent temps wiht it. If you're staying @ stock just use the Intel fan.

that heatsink on the 7+ is simply too small for a prescott IMO. i had one on my 2.4@3.2 1.525v using the medium fan speed and the temps would get up around 65C. the stock heatsinks for the prescotts are really well designed heatsinks, if anything you could try to mod the stock heatsink with a better fan.

ideally it would be best to buy a thermalright sp-94 or a zalman 7000cu. those are the best aircoolers you can get right now

True dat, but remember some ppl's budgets. ;)

Slap an M1A or something equivalent on that SP-94 and you've got yourself a top of the line cooler that's still easier on the ears then your dreaded Volcano. ;)

Go with the Intel if you dont have the spare cash for one of the above coolers.

ive had many v7+, not worth a damn

It didn't treat my 1800+ very well so I'd think it'd have an even harder time with that 2.8 prescott of yours, seeing as they're just a BIT warmer then the AXP pally I had it "cooling". ;)

what hsf do you guys suggest for like 20 bucks. Im interested in something i can overclock a 2.8e to 3.2 with. I know the zalman and thermal right are good, but they are too pricey, let me know.

you dont want to go cheap with heatsinks. i know that the zalman is 42$ from newegg but itll be well worth it in the long run. you will have MUCH better temps even if you dont overclock. i mentioned only the zalman because if 20$ is your budget than the sp94 is really out of your range cause for 57$ (newegg price) you only get the heatsink and you have to buy a fan seperatly. Zalman also offers an aluminum / copper mixed 7000 thats a little cheaper at around 36$.

Zalman 7000A-Cu

Zalman 7000A-AlCu

what do you guys think about the volcano 9? As far as cheap solutions go, could i Just replace the fan on the volcano7+? Im trying to see my 20 dollar options on this one.

the current fan on the volcano 7+ is a really good fan, its just loud as hell. i think the problem lies with the heatsink itself, it just isnt large enough to the 100+ watts of a prescott

here is a rule to live and die by in the tech world:

Thermaltake sucks at making cooling products (except for their smartfan II)

Trust me. Pretty much everyone will agree. Everyone that didn't drop $300 on an aquarious wcing system from them that is...;)

True, I wouldn't call it a REALLY good fan, but it's not horrible either. The main problem IS that heatsink indeed.....not really my cup of tea. ;)

Hey, you forgot my Giant III, it's one hell of a video card cooler and LOOKS like a beast to boot. With a little modding I've improved it even further.....should be interesting.

I agree about the Aquarius though.....those poor saps. :p

the giant III is WAY to loud for me on full blast, but since you modded it I guess its alright:D . I wonder how a vga silencer would compare.....

Compared to mine on my (old) card I have no idea.....the VGA Silencer doesn't fit on the XT's. ;) I never have actually used the Reverflow fan on anything more then low speed because honestly it only improved the core by 1C.....and was REALLY not worth the noise. The blower was even worse but now that I have cut off that whole middle section it isn't even there........which allows my 120mm aluminum fan (85cfm) to blow THROUGH the plates and cool the ramsinks. I also went one step further last night (I was bored) and took an old 60x10 (or maybe it was 60x15) fan from a crappy coolermaster s462 heat sink I had kickin' around and I attached the fan to the back plate on the Giant. I figured that since all the heat is being transfered to that plate.....might as well cool it directly. ;) The fan only moves about 20cfm but it's a LOT better then nothing. Looks pretty pimpin' too. ;)

But yeah, it isnt all that audibly appealing right out of the box. ;)

It is pretty cool. I don't have a digicam so I can't really get you any pics.....but I'll do my best to get one taken in the next while. I'm gonna be at a LAN on the 8th so worst case scenario I can get some taken then.

Heh, then you'll also get to see my Lian-Li PC61B since the cuts have been done to the side panel.....it's pretty tight. :D

so, what if i got a better heatsink, and put the quieter stock intel fan on it? which heatsink should i get if i do that.

Off the top of my head I'm not sure EXACTLY how it's built but I'm not sure if you can just "put" the Intel stock fan on another heatsink. I'm looking at the stock cooler that came with my 2.8C and if it's anything the same (seem to remember that it is) then I'm not sure how you'd work it. The plastic is "molded" to fit onto the intel heatsinks.....and doesn't have the traditional four hole mounting system.

If you want something that's gonna give you better temps AND lower noise levels then the Intel stock cooler and you don't wanna break the bank go with the Zalman CNPS7000-ALCU or the CNPS7000-CU. The only difference is that the CU is pure copper and the ALCU is aluminum copper. Some people feel a little more comfortable with the ALCU as it does weigh a bit less.....but you won't see more then a 2-3C difference between them. The Zalman comes with a fanmate (single fan controller) that IMO is completely useless. If you've got even one case fan in your box you will NOT be able to hear the Zalman, even on it's "full speed" of 2,500rpm.

That's my opinion, if you want the all out best then pick up an SP-94 with a 92mm Panaflo M1A. The thing with the Thermalright combo is that the Zalman ALCU can be had for less then the cost of the SP-94 on it's own.....and you still have to buy a fan seperately for the Thermalright.

If you are going with zalman, stick with their 7000 series only.

6500 = no unless you want temps in the mid 60's on load.

I got a VERY good laugh out of this dude, thx. What's even better is the fact that he's dead right.....unless you're TRYING to overheat your cpu I'd recommend against anything but the 7000 if you're looking at Zalman. ;)

alright, i wont get 6500. Which one should i get if i wanna spend like 25 bucks. Or should I just switch to a 3.2c instead of a 2.8e?

i was looking at the volcano 11, i had a v7+ and it didnt do all that well, maybe their newer stuff is better. Its 25 bucks which is a pretty good deal.

Acting on experience I just would NOT buy another Tt cpu cooler to save my life. I dunno, just because of the stupid grudge I've got against 'em I'd just keep the stock fan but whatever. ;) The Spark 7 is actually not THAT bad of a cooler, but it gets horribly loud if you actually wanna get to it's peak 49cfm.
