Running the tracker max's every thing both gpu's and the cpu . Heat goes beyond acceptable limits for me ie: gpu's in the 70+c range & cpu's @ 57+c , tried limiting the gpu's "heat" to 50% & they still use 95% on both & same temps . Seriously wana use the app but need help in reducing usage & heat created across the board .FYI the standard f@h tracker from Stanford's site kept cpu ussage @ about 25% & temps were ok , would want both cpu & gpu's in that range if possible . Thanks for any help and the efforts of those running things here .

In all honesty, at this moment, it's not worth running the GPUs. I have an AMD 5870 with an i7 920 at home (not overclocked), and actually got less ppd when running the video card then I do on CPU alone. The AMD GPU clients simply aren't as ready as the CUDA clients are for folding.

That said, it sounds like you were running the standard CPU client instead of the SMP client, as that would use 1 core = 25% of the available CPU on a quad core. For capping the speed, you can reduce the number of cores, and run SMP; or run something like NotFred's VM on the free VMware Player when you can actually set the Mhz alloted to the VM. FYI, my typical PPD on a Q9400 when using it normally during the day, is about 3000-3500ppd with the SMP client

Really, your temps are fine. I run my Q9550 24/7 at 60C or a little higher and have no issues. I agree that there's probably no point to using the GPUs if you're concerned about heat, but those temps are fine too.

As Syran said, if you're really not happy with the temps you could go back to running the standard client, which is supported by the GPU Tracker (choose CPU not SMP). Or, create multiple directories for the Stanford client to run multiple copies (2 for 50% load, 3 for 75% load). Your point output will be much lower than with the SMP client, but there is still a lot of valuable uniprocessor work to be done.
 
like Syran said, for now keep the gpu client turned off. when the openCL client comes out then it will definitely be worth running those 2 cards. the cpu temps are perfectly fine though. i run my phenom II x4 940 @ 70C during the summer. mind you the max temp's suppose to be 62C for this processor. you on the other hard are 30C+ below the TJmax for that processor so theres nothing to worry about.
 
The GPU temps don't matter, don't run the GPU client. Disable the GPU client in configuration then set the CPU to SMP and write 3 in the "number of cores to use" field. That will keep the CPU temperature down while good work done.
 
Your CPU can handle temperatures of up to 100C. Exceeding 57C is not a problem at all. As others have said, you should disable the GPU clients since they will significantly lower the performance of the SMP client running on your CPU. Unfortunately, that is just the way things are with ATI cards at the moment.

As for heat, obviously running your PC at a higher load is going to produce more heat and consume more power. That's just something you have to deal with if you want to fold.
 
as has been said, the ATI cards are probably hurting more than helping with the speed of the CPU, you have plenty of head room i ran my Q9450 at 70c the majority of the time i owned it
 
Temps are fine.
If you're concerned, you can do one of many things including buying a better heatsink, reseating the one you have and applying fresh TIM, adding a better (higher CFM/rpm) or additional fan (if it's a tower cooler) to run push/pull.

Seriously though, temps are fine. Even the stock cooler on Intel quads puts the cpu around 70s at load.
 
Big Thanks for all the input . Reset the cpu cooler & paste , all multi-cores smp client running @ 100% currently 50 c - 53 c , well under tcase 71.4 http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?spec=SLB8V . Was just worried as the cpu is new . Will stay away from the gpu portion [ was running fans w/ msi after burner ] untill theres a cure for the client . This is the kids gaming rig & he wants more point output than he was getting . Again Thanks ! :cool:
 
ignore the tcase it means nothing. thats just the max temp you should see stock clock, stock heatsink. aka OEM crap. with intel use the TJmax which is the true max temp for that processor. real temp will give you the exact TJmax and how far away from the TJmax you are.
