Hi, i am about to purchase an lcd the question is do you have to run action games like UT, Q3,BF1942, with v-synch enabled or can you run the games withought it.

what i mean is can you still get high frames per second. What kind of frames per second are you getting on an lcd.

thx in advance .

Please could someone tell me if they do get high frames per second on their lcd?, thanx

Do to the way LCD monitors work. It don't matter. Just run with it turned off and you will be fine. So to answer your question. You do not need V-sync with a LCD or PD monitor.

Without vsync enabled, even LCD's get tearing... atleast on my vp171b and 9800pro I do..

Thanx for the replys guys, i just want to run all my games withought V-sync to get reasonable frames withought tearing,
because i dont want to be tied to a 60-75 refresh rate, meaning i only get 75 fps max.

I thought more gamers would have given an answer to this, i just dont want to spend £700+ and find this problem.

Maybe buying a 22" crt is the way i should go?

I personally love my VP171b, you can't get a crisper picture, not to mention you save a ton of room on your desk. I would suggest still getting an LCD orver the CRT.

For LCDs refresh rates are not that significant than for CRTs.

CRT redraws it's screen contantly which makes it pulsing. (Your eyes gets tired with lower refresh rates)

But you can't distinguish the frames above 30 fps.

The weak point of LCD's is the response time which could go above 40ms. You can observe it as smearing/"ghosting" effect. (The typical response time from black-to-white-to-black which is given by the manufacturer is mostly the lowest value of possible cases)

The 60 Hz for an LCD is 60 fps which is more than enough.

thx again for the help, but 60 fps online in a first person shooter for example is not going to get me many frags.

Just wanted to know if any online gamers got more than 100 fps or over, on their lcd.

IS IT POSSIBLE?? my hopes are fading :(

Yes you can get over a 100 fps with an LCD.. the LCD isn't going to slow down your frames. I run U2k4 with 4x AA and 8x AF at 1280x1024 and I run at a constant 74fps, but my refresh rate is set at 60hz. So, no the refresh rate on an LCD screen doesn't affect your frames.

Okay, I am a big time FPS gamer... I gotta ask. How does high frame rates translate into more frags? As far as I know, from years of experience with a wide range of slow and crap hardware to high end excellence that as long as you can maintain a average and low frame rate above 30 (ideally 60) you are fine... who cares if you can top out at 200fps if you dip into the 20s at time???

What i wanted to know was, if you could achieve higher frames
per second withought using v-sync and withought getting tearing.

100 frames per second was an average i picked, any good gamer worth his salt would know that dipping under 60 hits performance.

You obviously wanted to let off steam,so i dont mind that, but the more positive posts have helped more, and i thank the guys for that.

Wasn't blowing off steam, though if you took offense to my question I am sorry. It is a valid question though. Especially since it looks like several upcoming titles will be locked to 60FPS no matter the hardware or settings (if I understood it right).

To answer your question, yes you can achieve higher frames without v-sync on, and no you will get tearing without v-sync enabled.

xomegax did you mean i wont get tearing in the last bit of your post?.

Thank you for being kind enough to help :)

With v-sync enabled, you wont get tearing, however your FPS will be capped at the refresh rate set on the monitor (you can set it around 75hz with an LCD), which is plenty for any game, imo. If you have v-sync off, no matter what your refresh rate is you will get 100+ fps, but will get tearing.
