In Windows Vista is it possible to replace the Uxtheme file with a patched one so as to be able to apply visual styles?

It is, but it's more complicated in Vista because it requires not one but three files being replaced. With this file:

http://anti-tgtsoft.com/repository/uxtheme/Windows Vista/SP0/6.0.6000.16386_XX.rar

and by following the instructions within you can run unsigned themes in Vista. There's only one problem:

That site apparently used up quite a bit of bandwidth of late and I don't know if or when they'll be back to "normal" operation. I spent a few minutes trying to find a mirror of that file for you but didn't have much luck. All the Google hits for "vista uxtheme patch" all end up pointing right back to that link above, so unless you can find someone that's already got that patch archive to share with you, it's hurry up and wait till the site above gets back up to speed.

Hope this helps.

By the way, the instructions look like this:

Are you tired of Vista's Aero theme?
A patched uxtheme.dll gave you the freedom to use un-signed custom visual style in Windows XP but in Windows Vista you have to replace three dll files to use third party visual styles.
Those three files are uxtheme.dll, shsvcs.dll and themeui.dll

Download The Patched Files
6.0.6000.16386_XX.rar (32bit)
6.0.6000.16386_XX_AMD64.rar (64bit)

How To Install
1. Login as a user with Administrative privileges -or- have Administrative
credentials ready (check under the keyboard for a slip of paper).
2. Navigate to %systemroot%\System32
3. Right-click uxtheme.dll and click properties.
4. Take ownership of the file and close dialogs.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for themeui.dll and shsvcs.dll
6. Right-click uxtheme.dll and click properties.
7. Give yourself (or group) Full Control permissions and close dialogs.
8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 for themeui.dll and shsvcs.dll.
9. Rename uxtheme.dll to uxtheme.old.
10. Rename themeui.dll to themeui.old.
11. Rename shsvcs.dll to shsvcs.old.
12. Copy patched files into %systemroot%\System32
13. Reboot (yes, this is really required)
14. Enjoy!

Just for the record, as long as you follow those steps and replace the proper files with the ones included in the archive (if you can find it), it does work. I did this back in January and was running HiledSE which was one of the first replacement themes for Vista. You can get more info and the theme itself at:

That artist has done several revisions of that theme and created a new one also; his stuff is gorgeous.

Hope this helps... if I locate the patch archive someplace I'll post linkage here. And yes there was a 64 bit patch for Vista x64 also, just have to locate that particular one as well.
