UT3 Crashes

Hello, just like the title says my UT3 keeps crashing at random points and I was wondering if anyone else is having similar problems. On average I get about 30 minutes of play and then the game freezes and goes to desktop. Also, after every crash my desktop resolution gets changes to 1024x768 which is what I've been trying to use in the game. I've updated to the latest ATi driver and there's no difference. I read that UT3 has problems with some onboard sound chips, could that be my problem or is it my 1GB or RAM and 1950PRO? Any help would be great, cause this game is way too fun to pass up:(.

Are you running Vista? UT3 and Vista didnt get along for me. I had the same problem. I made a XP partition and its been great since then.

I am on XP 32 bit. My video card is watercooled. With Systool the core is 40c right now, not sure how much hotter is could get in game. Maybe I should run DriverCleaner and get a fresh install of the latest divers. I also should mention that all my other games(CS:S Bioshock, BF2, Portal) run without problems.

Well, just tried 800x600 and settings on 2, still crashed after 20 minutes or so. I looked on the UT3 forums and there seems to be a number of problems with ATi cards. Maybe the first patch will clear things up.

I recal previous version of unreal engine being sensitive to overclocks that are not rock solid. In 2k4 if I overclocked my processor I would get general protection faults and the game would crash. Try removing your overclock (assuming you have it overclocked since you have watercooling) and giving it a run.

I suggest you update your drivers. I was having major problems running the game until I updated to the latest nVidia beta drivers, so it's possible that there might be an issue with earlier ATi drivers as well.

Well I now crashed in XP 3 times as well in the past 2 hours. I just think the game is poorly optimized cause it seems like you go to the Epic forums and alot of people are also experiencing problems with the game.

On another note, is it me or does the weapons seem overly powered? It takes like 2 hits on any gun it seems and you are dead? In 04 I do not remember dieing so quickly and randomly. Usually you know who killed in 04.

The weapons are closer to UT99 in terms of damage. I agree that some of the weapons seem overpowered though, namely the Link Gun and the Stinger. They also nerfed the Flak Cannon, which I'm a bit pissed about.

I get a lot of crashes with XP also. I wouldn't worry about your system or drivers, there's a problem with the game. I'm going to give whql drivers a try and see what happens.

I am glad I came across this cause I was starting to wonder if it was just me. I purchased this game earlier tonight from Best Buy and had it installed without issue. I was able to load the game and change settings without issue as well. Once it was done I defragged my drive, rebooted and began to play. After 20 mins the screen went black and I got a 'UT3.EXE HAS ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO CLOSE...' error. Is this the same error message you guys are getting or something different. No clue what is going on as earlier today I had prime95 Blend running on my system for over 14h straight without a single core failure. System is exactly as in sig and it is definitely no slouch for this game. I expected to run crash free but I was wrong. I take it I too can not worry about it being anything wrong with my system, but in fact it is the game itself?

It's not just you...it seems that people across many different hardware/OS configurations are having similar or the same crashes...as am I.

I get the occasional lockups also. It will either happen within the first 30 minutes of playing, or not at all. This is on a box with all stock clocks.

From reading around I have found that many people have recommended disabled hardware OpenAL sound. I have done this and was able to play for 35 mins without a single error message where as it would always do it within the first 20 mins. Like the previous poster mentioned if it is going to crash it is usually within the first 30 mins of play or it is fine.

One thing I mentioned however was during the Avalanche Warfare map that after a while of playing the textures on some of the ground started to 'vibrate' or look as if they are slightly shifting up and down, up and down. Really hard to explain but it sorta gives the screen a flickering effect as these textures move about the way they do. Anyone else experience any graphical anomolies such as this?

Its the bloody xfi drivers and ut3 engine that dont mix, gears and ut3 do the same on my rig.

Also, have you guys tried installing the Beta Patch?

I have a XP Pro32 w/ Pentium 540 w/ X1950gt PCI-e w/ 1GB DDR2 w/ ATI RC410 chipset MB.

Software: COD4, Crysis Demo, Office 2007, ZoneAlarm AV, TopDesk, MSFT VX6000 Cam, AdAware2007

I do NOT have the MB overclocked but I do have the video card.

I have not gotten any reboots.

Ever since I have disabled the Hardware OpenAL in the audio options, I havnt had a crash. Yesterday I played this game for 4-5 hours straight without a crash while before I was lucky to get the game to go crash free for an hour, so I think disabling OpenAL did the trick for me. I have an XFI Fatility sound card and am on Windows XP Pro.

I installed UT3 and immediately went to playing it, played fine for nearly one or two hours, I mostly fiddled with the video settings and editted my online character to how I liked. Then I tossed myself into the Campaign mode on Hard for a little slap in the face, being I'm an old Unreal Tournament junkie who's outta practice. All went well, no lag, little jumpiness from MSN being up and some bastard sending messages like "UT3, is it kewl?" yeah, whatever. Well, I went on to install another game I recently got, FEAR: Perseus Mandate, played it all night long. I get up today and start up UT3, game crashes, my screen goes blank for a short while before the PC automatically reboots, I have no idea why it did it either.

So far, it does it whenever I reach the UT3 menu to login, it sounds like a sound looping problem, but it has done it before I even see opening promo movies for UT Engine and Intel, so yeah.

2.0 GHz Pentium 4 processor.
640 MB RAM
GeForce 7800 GS BFG Modified, overlocked to run 400 MHz on the engine, and 1250 on memory, vs. the standard 375 MHz and 1200 MHz.
GPU Cooled by fansink, though I checked the temp levels, its a steady 35F-40F
As for the soundcard, unsure what kind it is, came with my box and never had problems.

I am going to roll back my Nvidia drivers, seems when I try to play Splinter Cell: Double Agent, the hardware detection isn't compatible with my current drivers. Any tips on how to fix this are welcome.
