My system specs are below....

I will upgrade my pc soon, I have a fair bit of cash but I cant go over the top.

UT2004, most maps I get around 30 frames a second which i know isnt that great but its certainly playable. But other maps I get like 5fps in some places.

I got people getting 90 frames a second on max detail and I cant even get 40 on some maps at just medium detail.

Need an upgrade........ what would make UT2004 run smoother..... upgraded CPU or upgraded gfx card?

Please recommend an upgrade, thanks

a video card. If you dont want to upgrade for a while. get the ATI radeon 9600 XT. Run you up around 200 dollars but when the new games release like Hl2. You should be OK.

$200 i can afford but I dont live in US, I live in UK and the prices for the 9800xt are so high its like $530 for that card

However if you recall the HL2 demo they ran it on a 2.8 ghz P4 and that was like just stong enough , Unreal 3 will be even more taxing. 3 ghz or AMD equivalent and a gig of ram would be whats needed to ensure total emersion. Not to mention the aformentioned Video card.

He said 9600XT, not 9800XT.

I would get an nVidia 5900XT and overclock it. They will outperform any mid-range card on the mareket.

HL2 JUST ran on a P2 2.8? With what, a GeForce MX?

There is NO way HL2 will require a P4 2.8GHz, it will run on MUCH lower, trust me.

Idid not say it would not run. I was implying that if you wanted to realy enjoy all the eye candy. The demo was on a P4 2.8 some time ago.IT was not optimized and it brought a 9700 to its knees

Taken from a May 2003 article in gamespy

"With all of these considerable graphical upgrades, we were pleased to hear that the minimum system specs are currently targeted at a 700 MHz PC with 128 MB RAM and a DX6-level video card, meaning you won't need a NASA supercomputer to run Half-Life 2. Of course, you'll want to have something better to fully reap the benefits of the new tech, but gamers who haven't upgraded in a while shouldn't have to worry about breaking their budget. " End Quote

If it like any other game you will want to double that to have a shot at eye candy on and high fps. SO you were correct and i was maybe thinking a Doom article. I guess I am owned on this one :D

What kind of ram do you have in your box? What are your timings at for your memory? That could be an issue. More then likely the 64 Mbs on the Vcard is the biggest issue.

I guess in some game the 9500pro is better then the 9600XT. That surprises me. Is there a reason for it? Can you still get a 9500 pro anymore (besides a used one)?

Where are you seeing the 9800XT for £530?

I didnt say £530, I said $530! I am in UK but converting the price so the US people can understand if they dont know how to convert $ to £.

Yes £289 is $528 which is not what psyman said........

He said i should beable to get a 9800xt 256mb for $200 but clearly i cannot.

Definitely the video card. Wherever you shop check prices on these cards and compare and see what you can afford and are willing to spend:

9600Pro
9600XT
9800Pro

Any one of these would be a fine upgrade!

No he said 9600XT NOT 9800XT, big difference.

I say 9600 Pro, 9600 XT or 9800 PRO.

I had these specs on my old comp and UT2004 ran flawlessly:

Geforce 4 Ti4400 128 MB
1.5 Ghz AMD Athlon XP 1800+
512Mb Ram PC 2700 (DDR333)
Wester Digital 40GB 7200 RPM
Asus A7N333 Mobo
On board audio.

If you build that nowadays, it's like a $400 machine. Heheh

Ran everything great, and still does.
I got like 40-60 avg FPS

yes i misread, sorry, he did say 9600xt. The 9600xt isnt much better than what i have now, well its not worth the upgrade.

I think I will go for the 9800xt 256mb, what company should i get? ASUS? MSI? Gainward? Herculues etc and can anyone find me a nice UK price for this card

You're on a budget and now you want a $500 (US) video card?
*EDIT* - nevermind, I just now noticed you have "a fair bit of cash", and somehow I had your system specs all mixed up. I still stand by the 9800 Pro as the better choice.

Do not get the 9800XT. I repeat, DO NOT GET IT. It's a big waste of money, and by the time you can upgrade the rest of your system around it, it'll be headed toward obsolescence like every other video card ever made.

The Asus was great upgrade for me from a 9700 pro however I must agree that now it would be a huge mistake. Its all about timing. I sold my 9700 with Zalman for top dollar and purchased the 9800xt for top dollar. Your too close to the next gen cards to purchase a card that will easily be 100 dollars US cheaper in 60 days or less. If you are hell bent on dropping 5 bills then wait a little longer for next gen whether its ATI or Nvidia

so basically if I want a new card anytime soon, do not get the 9800xt but just get the standard pro version? how much cheaper is the pro than the xt? is there really a big difference in performace betwen the pro and xt?

Another person said I should wait for the next gen cards to come out and then get the 9800xt because the price will drop alot? is this right?

Im waiting untill the next gen ones come out to get a 9800 pro, for two reasons, it will hopefully be cheaper and Ill have the money for it then.

So its up to you but im waiting.

I don't know about it being the video card... My current card seemed to me to be more or less equal to the GF4 Ti4200 I used to have except for the far superiour pixel shader abilities and I'm pretty sure the GF4 had an advantage when it came to larger numbers of polygons which I would assume UT2004 uses (though probably more for the character models and weapons I suppose.) I admit I've only run the demo of UT2004 so far, but all the stuff I tried ran quite smoothly with detail settings up pretty high. In fact, things ran so smoothly, I was beginning to wonder if UT2004 really used much more powerful graphics at all. So I would think that if your GF4 Ti4200 isn't overclocked, just overclock it a tad and you might be able to pull off UT2004 with smooth graphics. I can't help but wonder if it's a bad setting somewhere in fact.

BTW, from what I hear, the 9700 Pro is a nice cheap solution for the people who need a card to last them a little while but to have some vague hope of maybe being able to play stuff like Doom3 (albiet probably in 640 with low detail I would presume.)

I'm about to get UT2004, so I'll let you know if I find out that the full version doesn't run well compared to the demo on this system.

A 9800 PRO will treat you very nicely in UT2K4. You can buy one for $179 in the states and the price is droping every week.
I get nice fps running UT2K4 benchmarks with my 9800 PRO.

1600X1200 setting on max
dm-rankin
Score = 88.313591

as-convoy
Score = 51.048435

ons-torlan
Score = 46.427750

br-colossus
Score = 99.774422

ctf-bridgeoffate
Score = 106.574463

Well, I just picked up UT2004 last night and played it a bit on my middle machine (2200+, 9700Pro, 1G pc 3200....) and I had NO issues whatsoever with high settings...This being said any of the moderately priced cards should do you fine!

No and I am sick of how ATi has been getting rid of their fast cards and putting cheaper ones on the market. You can no longer get a 9700NP or a 9500Pro anywhere. The gap between their older cheap and expensive cards used to be small (9700NP and Pro) but now between the 9600P and the 9800P, there is a big difference. I liked the way things used to be.

Is the Ti4200 TD64 different only in having less memory than the 128 mb versions, or is it also less memory bandwidth (since we know how much nVidia likes to jerk is around that way:| )?

I'm running UT 2004 on the following system:

AXP @ 2100mhz (210mhz FSB) on an A7N8X deluxe using onboard sound and networking. Video is a GF4 Ti-4200, only have 512 megs of memory right now (though I will probably upgrade, I notice map changes take a bit longer than I'd like them to).

I haven't ran any benches (if someone posts the info on how to run them, I will), but from what I've seen so far the game is playable at 1024x768 with everything set to max.

Erik

I used this to benchmark the UT2k4 demo. I am not sure how well it works with the retail version. To run it just doubleclick botmatch-all.bat in the benchmark folder. The results will be in the lowframerate.log text file.Benchmark

you'd have to be a mug to buy a new vid card right now so close to next gen.

Cheaper to get a mobile xp and o/clock should get a nice performance increase on everything not just games. TI4200 is still good enough. Wait till HL3 comes out, you can prob get that bundled with next gen cards when arrives eventually.

yeah uk prices suck. actually all prices bar far east/ US are too exp for comps

I'm unfamiliar with the TD64 model since I grabbed the Ti4200 back when it first came out from gainward. Well, I don't know about the TD64, but back when they first came out at least, all of the 128MB models were using a slightly cheaper and slower memory to help keep the costs of the cards down, so the 64MB models actually had slightly faster ram (only by 25MHz or so if I remember, but I don't remember well.) Of course, much of the difference can be made up by utilizing a larger amount of ram...

Anyway, I got the full version now, so I was able to try it out with the larger variety of maps, textures, and higher quality settings (demo is very limited) and the game is still running quite smoothly on my system. I haven't run the benchmark or anything (lazy) but it's smooth and that's all that matters to me.

Oh, and as for the Ti4200 as I've said before, the one I used to have was actually moderately better than my current card in many ways (including high polygon count.) Of course, ATI beats the living daylights out of nVidia when it comes to pixel shaders (as in being about twice as good as the equivalent nVidia card in my case at least.)

I dont think its the video card really thats causing the lag for you. I have a geforce 4 4200(128mb however) and it runs just fine for me with all the settings turned up to max.

Maybe you have AA and other things enabled on the vid card?

Vsync is disabled right?

Yep, AA is off, AF is off and vsync is disabled, dont get me wrong the game runs fine most of the time, its certainly playable but its just a few maps that it gets bad like sometimes on ONS-Articstronghold i think its called, when i go to the main red base or main blue base, sometimes, not all the time, but sometime i get 4fps.

Ok so how would I overclock my gf4ti4200? and is it safe to do it?

if you are willing to pay for 9800xt, then get one of the next generation cards (R400's & NV40's)

It's definitely safe to overclock a GF4 Ti4200 usually. Especially if you have a well made one like that goldensample that gainward makes. I got very nice ocing results out of that thing. Anyway, basically all you need to do is find the nvcoolbits (search google) registry file and merge it into your registry. You probably will have to reboot, but after the software reads it in you will find an extra option in the advanced display options that lets you change it. There are also external programs that can change the clocks, but usually there's just no point since you'd generally have to load that program at every startup (whether manually or automatically.) I personally suggest using a program called ArtifactTester (5 was the latest version last I looked) but there may be others that would work. This program is very good for testing stability and whether you've oced too much or not. Basically, the best thing to do is find the highest levels your card seems to be able to maintain under extreme conditions, then step off just a tiny bit from there so that even if your room gets too hot or something it should still be ok.
