Using Windows XP programs in Windows 7

For people with experience migrating their Windows XP programs into Windows 7, how much of your programs were fully supported in Windows 7 and ran perfectly in Windows XP virtualization mode ?

Also, is there an alternatively more efficient way to do things besides using Windows XP mode ?

I've had more issues with being on x64 than simply just 7. You have to remember that Vista has been out since late 2006 and designers have been considering it since. If an application runs on Vista it's 99% guaranteed to run on 7. There are exceptions but are few and far between. The only things that don't run on 7 that run on Vista that I know of are some games that probably shouldn't run on Vista anyways.

Outside of some old stuff (mid 2000's and earlier), I can't think of anything modern that won't run on it. So to answer your question, it depends how old the applications are. Being old does not automatically condemn it to incompatibility though. I've ran some late 90's stuff on 7 just fine.

Are there any specific programs you have in mind?

As for XP mode, it works OK. I couldn't get the virtualized XP to burn to my hardware though so that was an issue for me when running an old version of Nero I had in XP mode. I only experimented with it though because frankly I don't need it. Everything I have runs on 7 x64.

I went from XP (32 bit) to 7 (x64) on my workstation at home and have had zero problems with program compatibility. I have a lot of apps and many games and haven't even had to use the XP compatibility mode. In my experience, if it ran fine with XP it'll probably not have an issue running in 7. Some older or obscure titles may need the compatibility mode if they have not patched it for Vista/7 but unless its a rare title I doubt it'll be an issue.

At my work the bosses wanted to upgrade about 30 pc's to windows 7 from xp but the software wasn't compatible it would just crash or not load correctly. The software we use blows (I really dislike fixing it) but we are required to use it (paccar/adp applitcations). You might want to check around to see what you are using to see if others have got it running in windows 7, it really depends on the application.

I use several XP programs in Win 7. No problems whatsoever, don't even use compatability mode.
I'm sure there are XP progs that have issues with 7 though.
