My ATI Silencer won't fit in the first PCI-E x16 slot on my A8N-SLI Premium.
I was going to just stick it in the second slot, but the manual says in single card mode, the second slot acts as a PCI-E x1 slot.

The problem is the screw on the back of the Silencer hits the little white clip on the RAM holder on the very first slot.
If I could figure out how to take that thing off, I'd do it and just put my RAM in slots 2 and 4, but I can't get it off.

Card is a X850 XT, BTW.

So, WTF do I do?

Anyway, it looks like I should be able to file the RAM thing down since I only need about 1 mm more room.
Looks like my other option is to replace it with the Zalman VF 700.
For now I just stuck my X300 in there because I'm tired of messing with it and I'm starving.

I thought about trying the card in the second slot just to see, but decided against it.

well if you set sli and put the card in the 2nd slot then its just gonna run at half speed which defeats the purpose of using a pci-e x16 card in the first place.

Well doesn't 8x gives the same performance as 16x... I highly doubt any graphics card fills the bandwidth of even 8x...
 
well, I decided to try the card in the second PCI-E slot and see what would happen
everything appeared to be working fine after uninstalling and reinstalling the ATI drivers
I downloaded auqamark to benchmark it and it cruised through it, but after the last test, it errored out :(
so I swapped the X300 in and ran the test again, just to make sure it was a video card issue, and it worked fine, just a crappy score, of course

so I took some pics of just how close I am
you guys think I can file down this little white thing on the RAM slot?





 
If you can't, just break it off. seriously. That's what happened (accidently) to most of the clips in my old skt A mobo and ram still works fine in the slots missing a clip or two. You said you don't need that slot anyway!

Will your RAMs not work properly if you put them in the black slots instead of blue? :confused:

If you move that RAM to the next slot, then the clip can stay in the down position, by imagination it seems there's enough room then.

they will work there, but it's not gonna be in dual channel...

Okay I didn't know that. On my older ASUS P4C800 as long as you keep the two sticks of RAM in the same color slots (black+black, blue+blue) they will run in dual channel.
 
I would try it, on the DFI it orignally woudn;t even friggen post if the memorry wasnt in the orange slots first, later BIOS's now means dual channel works in orange+orange OR yellow+yellow.

Even with the clip in the down position, there isn't enough room.
It's VERY close, and I think the card is probably in deep enough to work, but the little clip that secures the card on the back won't snap in.

Not sure if the RAM will work in slots 2 and 4 or not.
 
I couldn't get it to pop out, but I did manage to trim it down
I could probably get the RAM in there, but the clip is slightly off center so I decided to just move it over to slot 2, since I would have to take the card back out to put the RAM in and it's almost impossible to reach the PCI-E release clip under the card with this huge cooler.
