so why is it going backwards at parts on the freeway? Did his homemade code just snap the wrong side of the freeway to take pictures from?

No, that's what's the nearest picture available for that exact spot. It's going "1-way" to the destination but sometimes it flips over to the other side. You can go "backwards" on google map in some spots.
