using RAID-controller as additional IDE

hi there, bought a maxtor diamondmax9 (hd performs quite poor but alright, no probs with it) and i just do not get the onboard
RAID to wirk solely as a additional ata133controller.
my asus p4b533-e features a promise ata133 raid chip which
seems not to offer an option for ide-only-mode -
neither in the boards bios nor within the raid-bios.
in the manual it says to set jumpers of 2 connected hds to slave to use it that way but by doing this with my single hd i get
crappy performance : the drive hangs in intervals of a few seconds and windows hangs / boots slow etc.

any1 know the cure ?
