i have a 40gb maxtor that is filled so i just got a 120gb seagate. i want to use them both. if i format windows onto the 120gb and then add the 40 as a data drive will that work? i dont want to lose anything off the 40 if it can be avoided but i want to use them both or should i use the 120 as a extra data drive? which way is better and how do i do it? thanks so much!
 
Yep that will work fine.

I'd keep the 40GB out while you install windows to the 120GB (just as an precaution).

Put it back in once your up and running on the 120
 
Either-Or.

You want Windoze on the quicker drive which is probably going to be the 120GB one.

Again if you do use the 120GB drive for the system drive, disconect the 40GB one.
This will force Windoze to use it as the boot-system drive and not use the 40GB one as the boot drive & the 120GB as the system drive.

ok thanks.. but windows is on the 40gb already do i have to take it off somehow? Also can i have them both on one ide cable one of those multiple device ones
 
Nope, just unplug the drive :)

That way all your data will stay nice and safe. After installing windows on the new drive, reconnecting the 40 and copying whatever is needed over (email, favorites, doc's,etc), I would then go ahead and format the disk using the disk management utility in windows.

Also can i have them both on one ide cable one of those multiple device ones?
Yes, but you will need to change the jumper(s) on the 40 to the slave setting.

that is what I would do. You should certainly install windows on the 120GB drive, since it is bound to be faster.
 
You can put both drives on the same cable. However you can move files between the two much faster if they're on different cables. This only applies to IDE drives which i'm assuming is what you're using.

Also if you wanted to save some time you could just hook up the new drive and create several partitions on it. Then copy over any data files that you want to keep to one of the new partitions. Then when you go to reinstall windows it should see the multiple partitions already created. From there you can tell it to install windows onto any of the partitions you created. You can create however many partitions you like. Personally I prefer having a few to organize things better.

The new drive likely would be faster but you don't necessarily have to use it if you don't want to. You can just move over any large files you're storing and probably reinstall any games that are taking up a bunch of space.

Usually I prefer:
C: - Windows
G: - Games
S: - Storage
 
well i put windows on the 120gb and im trying to transfer my game files like steam (source,hl2) and need for speed most wanted because i have a lot of time in that game and i dont want to start over. but nothing works once i copy it! what do i do now?

Assuming you are using "My Documents" for storage, just copy the contents of the old my docs onto the new one.

Many games also save to my docs as well so this may kill 2 birds with one stone so to speak.

1- apex/administrator should be what you want


For HL2:
got to: C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam
rename ClientRegistry.blob to ClientRegistry.blob.old (this makes it so that steam can't see it any more but you still have it just in case)
double click on steam.exe
you will have to re-authenticate, but you shoud be up and running then.
 
For NFS:Most Wanted

All of your saved games are in: ~\My Documents\NFS Most Wanted

reinstall the game and then copy the 'NFS Most Wanted' folder from your 40GB drive to the 'My Documents' directory of your 120GB drive

you should have everything the next ime you run it

one more thing though, i dont know what files to save from NFSMW so i dont lose my progress
