Using Large Hard Drive on old systems

I am about to purchase a 160 GB Seagate hard drive for my old system (300MHz machine with xp pro).

Given that I don't mind the 137 GB limitation (due to non-support of 48-bit lba) , can I expect to just install the drive and it should work OK as a 137 GB drive? I intend to use this as a secondary drive.

You'll probably want a offboard controller card with it's own BIOS, a machine of that era likely has the 33 GB limit. Check your BIOS's date and see if it's newer than around June or July of '99, thats typically when this limit was fixed.
