I got a new laptop about a week ago and I would like to get it connected online. My desktop is online through a cable modem using an ethernet cable.

I don't have, and don't plan on getting a wireless internet card for my laptop anytime soon. Id like to connect my laptop using an ethernet cable through my router. I tried before and I didn't have much luck. The internet froze on my desktop. So I have to reboot my computer
to get it connected again. As far as I read on my service providers site, I can have two computers connected but only one can be connected to the net at a time.

That makes sense, but how do I set it up? :(

Can anyone help me hook up my laptop?

oops, don't skim when reading posts... I might suggest moving your post to the networking forum though.

Sometimes I have to use the 'repair' function in Window's networking to get things going again.

He said he has a router. But for the hell of it, what brand /model of router is it? and how are you connecing everything?

Oh and make sure you're not setting both comptuer IP addresses the same.

cable internet (RR) from outside [connects] to my Linksys router.

Ethernet cable from port 1 on Linksys Router [connects] to Desktop. Ethernet cable from
port 2 on Linksys Router [connects] to Laptop.

What do you think?

Do you have DHCP enabled on the router, and both computers set up to have an IP address assigned to them?

you can always contact the manufacturer of the router. They all have 800 numbers you can call and they will walk you through setting everything up. I have done this with linksys a couple of times and once with belkin. They were both able to get me up and running.
