Using laptop speakers and external speakers at same time?

I am currently using my laptop speakers but i was wondering is there anyway i can plug in my desktop speakers which have a sub also into my laptop and be able to use my laptop speakers and the other speakers at the same time?
 
I did that with my HP lappy (I forget how exactly) and all I can say is... why? It sounded horrible. Even the $50 X-230's I used were far and away better than the laptop speakers. I guess the only good thing is that the laptop improves center fill, but then again it sounds so bad it's distracting.
 
Most notebooks disable the internal speakers then you plug something in the jack, this is a hardware feature that most often you can not disable. the only thing you can do is see if the sound drivers for you notebook has the ability to do what you want.
