Is it possible to use laptop displays with a standard videocard? Like a old 4870? Is there any resources I could tap? Did a quick Google search but just kept getting results on connecting laptops to monitors via HDMI. I'll keep searching but thought I would drop a line here to see if anyone had done it before. I got my wife and I old vostro 1500 hers finally died, mine a couple years ago not the panels are still good. Wanted to use them in a casemod if at all possible. The.
 
If I remember correctly it is next to impossible to get laptop screens working as a standalone monitor. Laptop panels require proprietary LVDS controllers in order to convert video card signals into something the laptop panel can understand and display.

I found this guide but your situation will differ depending on the exact panel you have. It generally is cheaper to just get another monitor from what I have read over the years.

You might need something like this to connect a LVDS panel to a standard video card.

Maybe this thread about a custom display made from a Chromebook Pixel panel can give you additional info.
