is there a way to hook up my home stereo (which is rather nice) to my pc in 2.1. Right now i can hook it up to my computer but only one speaker will work without a buzz

Give us some more clues:
sound card
interconnects you currently have
receiver
...
Also try the search function there have been plenty of helpful threads about this topic.

If you have a receiver, does it have inputs called "ext in" (short for extension input)? If the receiver has this, then yes, you can eaisly connect up your computer in 2.1.

I've got my computer hooked up to my Onkyo minisystem via a minjack to rca converter. The sound is good. I've got my computer speakers hooked up to my soundcard in 4.1 and use the onboard sound for 2.1 to the Onkyo. All I have to do is switch it over in the control panel when I want to use it and it works great.

right now i have a SB Audigy 1. i am building a new computer soon that will have a SB X-fi Extreme Music. As for convertors i have one that will take rca cords but only to exchange with more rca cords.. so im not sure if you can post what exactly i need that would be greatly appreciated.

To have 2.1 (and not just 2.0), you will want to check to see if your receiver has extension inputs. They may look something like what is found on the back of this receiver (bottom left, where it says ext in) example

1/8" mini stereo to dual RCA
Wiggles, be aware that if you do this, your only getting stereo 2.0 (not 2.1 like you said in your first post). Just a heads up

Wouldn't the receiver do the bass management for the LFE?
Some receivers can do this, but the bass would not be discrete IIRC. So, if they wanted to change their software settings for the sub with just a 2.0 setup, they would not be able to because the software tells them they only have 2 speakers. So it would be on the part of their sub and their receiver to change settings. They would only have a "master" bass adjustment, and depending on where the crossover frequency is for the receiver to output to the sub, it may affect both the sub and the main speakers (including any EQ).

But yea, it can be done, just with mixed results.
