Using HDTV as my only PC display?

In the past I've wanted (and at times needed) a computer in my room, but size has always been a restraint, I don't have room for a desk or a monitor and my TV. So, I'm going to be buying a 30" widescreen HDTV (1080i and 480p). I don't really want any TiVo functions since I have basic cable, all thirteen glorious channels.... So I plan on just getting a video card with S-video out and hooking it to the HDTV that way.
My question is, what kind of display am I going to be looking at since it's a widescreen? It's going to have black bars on the side isn't it? This will turn my 30" widescreen into a 24" 4:3, so what type of resolutions can I run on the tv? Am I limited to 800x600 or will 1024x768 run on it?
Will S-video make Battlefield 2 look like crap compared to what I am used to with a regular monitor? Would component using the ATi DVI to Component make it look any better?
 
I couldn't tell if you bought the TV yet already or not. S-Video is going to suck, and most likely it won't do higher than 640X480. If you are going as far as to get a widescreen HDTV you should at least get one with DVI in. DVI in will look much better and you will get higher resolutions.

What TV were you looking at?
 
If you are getting a hd tv get either a video card that supports hd out or use dvi with custom settings. Much better picture quality then s-video
 
No, I haven't bought the TV yet.

I am looking at one with HDMI but no DVI.
My main reason for going with S-video is because I mostly game with consoles, and I want the best possible video for the Xbox360 when it's released. So if the 360 looks better on HDMI, it gets to use the single HDMI input on the TV.

Most of the TVs in my price range do not have HDMI or DVI though, so if I don't get this particular TV, I probably won't be able to get one with anything better than Component.

What kind of resolutions could I use with component?

What do you mean by HD out?
 
S-Video is not HD! What HDTVs are there these days which don't feature a single DVI/HDMI port?
 
30 inch widescreen CRTs for under $600 lol

I don't really care if my PC is in high def or not, I just don't want it to be blurry at 640x480 resolution.
I haven't seen a videocard yet with HDMI, they all seem to have DVI, is there DVI-HDMI converter plug? Edit, found some for about $30
Again using component cables, is it possible to get atleast 800x600 or any widescreen resolutions?
 
I have a 6600gt with a dongle that provides for component output. I can display 1080i, 480p, and 720p on my TV. The quality is great. I suggest going this way if you cannot use DVI.
