Using Fan from a PSU

Is there a way I could use a fan from an old broken power supply? Are the wires soldered to a board or is it a plug? Is it even safe to take it apart or do they hold electricity for a long time?

The large capacitors in a PSU will store a charge for years if they're not discharged (ie, the PC was shut off for the last time using the switch on the PSU, and not shut down via windows... Shutting down via windows generally drains them). Having said this, if you're careful to avoid the pieces that pose a threat, you can snip off the SOLDERED fan.

You MIGHT get lucky and get a PSU with a 2pin fan connection (maybe even 3, but I've yet to see one), but that's generally only on expensive-r models. I always recycle parts inside my PSU. If you have a sufficiently powerful resistor (a few K or M ohms, rated at quite a few watts) you can discharge them to be really safe, but some careful planning (and only touching what you NEED to touch) can avoid that.

well, it probably doesn't have much power becasue the last time it was used, it tripped the home circuit breaker and the PSU was dead. thanks

From my experience, all PSUs use standard 12v fans with 2 leads usually, + (red) and - (black). You can hook them up to 12v molex no problem, I have done it many times when I am on a budget.

Not to try to go against Arcygenical's warning, but I have opened many, many power supplies without being shocked. Just be very careful not to touch anything that could short through your body. Also, only use one hand. That way, no charge can go through your chest and worst case scenario would you zapping your hand, not your body. Have fun. :D

I opened it up and lost all feeling in my right arm, lol, just kidding about that.

Anyway I did open it up and saw it was soldered to the board. When you say I could hook it up to the 12v molex, would I literally just strip the insulation of the wires and stick them in the molex holes and electric tape it up?

With that being said, before I cut it up, I don't suppose there is any way to find out what happened to the PSU and fix it somehow?

just cut the wires off the board, unbolt the fan, solder longer wires onto the existing wires, and match up the colors.

I like to take te molex adaptors from old ead fans and wire those together then hotglue them that way if th wire happens to touch something it won't short it out.

I am looking at a Molex connecter right now and it has 2 black wires. Would I use the one closest to the red wire?

Could I also just snip a molex connector off of the broken PSU and use screw on wire caps to connect the plug to the fan? I would probably then wrap that up in tape in case the cap comes off and doesn't fly around the computer.
