Using external HDD enclosure for DVD-RW

Ok, so for part of my new project, I want to use my current IOGear ION 3.5 Combo drive guts to power my DVD-RW externally. The power will actually be coming from the PSU in the case, but the question here is: will XP recognize the DVD unit as a reader/writer, or is the external drive hardware meant only for HDDs?

Any help would be great!
