How hard is it to use my desktop as a server. I need something to back up my laptop files onto. Would it be okay to run it over a wireless network? I plan on getting a new case for it so I can have more hard drives. It currently has two hard drives. A 160gb and a 500gb seagate.

The maximum hard drives I need is 4 really.

No it's not too hard and yes u can do it thru the wireless.
The easiest way to do is setup file sharing between the desktop and laptop using file sharing wizard in windows.

Can do it thru wireless but it's gonna be slower than hard wire.

No. of hard drives u can put in your desktop depends on ur mobo. You can always add a controller for more hard drives.

I set up file sharing between the two. Both my laptop and desktop are in my bedroom. I'm running it headless. Would purchasing a pci wireless network card be more reliable then my wireless usb adapter? Its sitting there and really quiet.

Rule of thumb is to generally keep things simple if you have a setup that is working just leave it as is.

out of interest what other use are you going to use the server for?

Mainly file backup for school work, video, music. I torrent some video files such as tv shows. That will also be stored on there. Takes forever to transfer files to it, But I'm not really running stuff off of it.

Shall I post pictures?

Personal experience: BT movies and everything on my main rig and macbook pro in my bedroom using wireless G with file sharing. I can watch a 720p HD movie thru the wireless live streaming without copying the files over the laptop first.

Whatever works, just keep it that way.
