Using the “bottom of the barrel” beer stuff to make fuel? That is a great idea! Considering how much beer is consumed in the U.S. alone, Budweiser, Miller and Coors could put Exxon out of business in no time. Hell, our friends in Europe could probably switch tomorrow. ;)

The inventor of the EFuel100 MicroFueler home ethanol maker has signed on Sierra Nevada Brewing to make ethanol from beer dregs. E-Fuel on Tuesday said that the beer company will start testing EFuel's refrigerator-sized portable ethanol refineries in the second quarter of this year using discarded beer yeast as a feedstock for ethanol.

If the demand increases for beer dregs to be used for fuel, that would mean they would have to produce more beer in order to get the dregs. More beer equals a glut of supply and cheaper beer. Cheap beer and fuel, this one sounds like a winning combination to everyone except M.A.D.D.

Was anyone else disturbed that the beer dregs are currently being sold as animal feed?

on the flip side this could dramatically reduce costs... especially for micro breweries since you could make energy efficient plants

Ha cool, Sierra Nevada Brewery is just down the road. Humm, I need to stop in there and get a case of ESB.

well so the articles today say we should go back to the awesome times of the world:
1. have sex more, instead of wasting money/resources on expensive resources that are limited/finite
2. drink more beer... to produce more energy
3. replace food with beer, as in the middle ages...

people use to be paid in beer, then again they were slaves (serfs) but they were given beer that was like oatmeal/pourage, stale, but helped the oats not rot... since they would ferment.

adult males would get 2 gallons a day, women 1 gallon and children 1-2 pints lol as food

It is pretty interesting (IMO) that the modern world was basically drunk up until the early 1700's when coffee was made popular in England.

2 gallons of mead?! Huzzah

Budweiser, Miller and Coors? i thought you said beer?

Being a Chico native I feel obligated to say, "Sierra Nevada FTW!"

Now, the question is: Can they make your car exhaust smell like fresh brewed hops?

And they will find out, just like with Ethanol, that you have to put more BTUs into making it into a fuel than the BTUs you get out of it for vehicle fuel. Plus, there will never be enough "dreg" to make even a blip in the fuel usage requirements for the U.S.

Or they could...you know...use corn and feed the left overs to cattle, seeing as how the leftovers from ethanol production are actually HEALTHIER than whole grain. Ask anyone thats been to a small, back country county fair and they'll tell you the best animals are raised on the waste from moonshine.

Ethanol is a horrible alternative to gasoline. Not only does it produce carcinogens, but the energy and land it would require to make any kind of significant dent in our dependence on gasoline completely obliterate the purpose.
