using a power switch for ide drives

ok fellas i know there has to be a way to do this without causing the system to lock or psu to freak out.

how can i install a power switch on a dvd and a hard drive, so that any time ai can reach down and shut them off or on.

all sorts of fans and other items have on/off switches on them so why not an ide drive.

i have a few switches , the on off "rocker" switch from the back of old psu's so the switch itself will handle the instand on and off of the juice.


can anyone tell me if i can simply install an inline on/off rocker switch onto a dvd or harddrive on an ide bus and make it work without causing the system and windows to freak ?
 
well I don't think this will work.. I'm pretty much positive that IDE devices have to be initialized during the boot up so if you turn you dvd drive after booting into windows it might not work (my optical drive that I used to hot-plug when system was running didn't work that way..)
 
yeah i figured it needed to be initialised during post or bootup

i have a simple comment =about the hotplugging or hotswapping.

i thought SATA was native hotswappable. ?

well i can tell you thats a lie. ive had 2 maxtor 160 gig and 2 36g raptors that wont. so what happened. i though they were hot swapable. ? those arent the drives im wanting to hot power on. it was just a passing thought

ok back to topic.

o guess i can install a switch and mount it thru the front bezel of the case and then power off and flip the switch and power on again that way... i just wanted to avoid the whole power off thing.
 
IDE/PATA really isn't hotswappable. SATA is spec'd for it, but only if the controller supports it.
