Using a laptop screen for a desktop's display?

Goal is to try to save as much desk space as possible with a laptop and a SFF desktop I just built. Tried just running a VGA cable from desktop's video card to the VGA in on the laptop...both laptop and desktop recognize that there is a connection but when I try to make any display changes the screen flickers once, doesn't change, and asks me if I want to keep the changes.

Was hoping for a simple plug it in, hit function+F7 and bam. Can this work? Don't mind buying some kind of adapter if I need it.

It's possible to do this, but it would be EXTREMELY complicated, and very messey and buggy....you'd have to crack open the laptop and run a another input into the LCD and work in some sort of KVM switch....but you end up with a hacked up laptop and mess of cables....so its not that worth it.

Another LCD won't be that big....

erm.. no... laptop LCD inputs dont accept VGA/DVI... they accept LVDS... you would need a controller card for the LCD to interfact with it and take the VGA input.
