So I have been trying to come up with a solution for the sound setup in my living room. I have a high quality stereo setup (Acoustic Research AR-9s connected to Kenwood L-07M monoblocks) that I also want to be able to use as front L/R while watching movies. Currently they are being fed from the analog output of an HT Omega Claro sound card to the L-07C preamp. I am trying to come up with a way to have a receiver that is fed via optical digital and powers the center, and rear L/R (I have no need for a sub with the AR9s). Anyone know if something like this is possible?
 
Assuming I understand correctly, all you need is a receiver with preouts for the front channels.

Alternatively you could buy a separate processor and buy more amps to power the remaining channels.
 
Well, I was hoping to keep the signal chain to the main speakers as simple as possible, maintaining the use of the matching preamp. I am not even sure they make modern receivers that would be in the same league. For example, when everything is set completely flat on it, the only thing in the signal path is a stepped attenuator (as opposed to a potentiometer) for volume control. I also want to be able to use the phono stage on it.

Ideally I would like to have some way to use 2 discreet outputs... Maybe there is some kind of nice DAC that I can feed optical, and break optical back out of to go to a receiver?

the way this is typically achieved is with an HT bypass on the stereo pre amp. your pre amp would be passive when in HT bypass mode, and then youd turn it off for music. since you already have a pre amp that solution isnt best here.

what you want to do is use 450s suggestion. in order to 'properly' use your existing pre amp (and by extension phono stage) you will also want a passive source selector.

that way you can switch your monoblocks from running off the HT pre amp and your music pre amp.

theres no need to do that. a HT pre amp will break out into discrete analog channels and then instead of feeding it to a reciever, feed it to a 3 channel power amp
