User Home Drive Empty

We are a windows 2008 Active Directory domain. About 160 staff that are a mix of roaming and local profiles. Everyone has a home folder drive letter to a server share and their My Docs, Pictures, Music is redirected with a group policy to the UNC path of that share.

This has happened three times over about 8 months so I am starting to get concerned...

A user will be fine working with their files one day, the next day their home drive is empty, likewise their my docs is empty as well with the exception of empty Pictures, and Music folders. Basically like they are starting over with a new folder.

It has happened with roaming and local user profiles. We use VSS so when I look at the copies, one day will have everything the next day nothing. I can copy the files back without issue although the most recent person has some corrupt files.

Nobody has offline files enabled.
 
If you look at the UNC path did it create a new folder for them?
 
I have done away with roaming profiles for this reason, too unstable on Windows 7 and 2008. I just create a home folder and tell them to save anything important to that folder, that way they are not saving itunes shit to the home folder.
 
As I mentioned, this is an issue with the home folder, the roaming profiles are never a problem. The two most recent issues are with users who have local profiles, not roaming.
 
Do you have any folder redirection to the home folder? If so you may need to check the UNC pats of all redirected folders, something could cause say appdata to reset and wipe out the entire folder.

Check event logs to see what is going on for the client machine the day this happens
 
We redirect everyone's my docs, IE favorites, desktop and a few other items to a network share, and I have never seen that happen before.
We don't do roaming profiles either.
 
Is there an issue with offline files on that machine? try disabling and re-enabling?

Interesting I will look into this appdata. We do have folder redirection to the home folder, it is a group policy but it is one policy applied to all staff members.

@huskerpat, as mentioned we do not have offline files enabled - except for laptop users but so far they have not had an issue with this problem. Desktop users without offline files. The files are neither on the computer nor on the server.
 
Sometimes poorly written apps will try and delete their own folder (like one in appdata) but instead delete a whole path structure.

Keep an eye out for similar apps between effected users.
