used storage server?

I'm starting to look at different options for a storage server. I went on eBay and found some servers, complete except for the hard disks. Is there any disadvantages to buying a used server? I mean, for a little more than the price of a new case, you have a complete server with case, psu, mobo, cpu, ram and sata controllers. Sure the technology is older, but for a data server, you don't really need to upgrade. If the setup works, it's pretty much set in stone, I think...?

example (can we post eBay links?) eBay item 130449127041

thanks

That is a pretty decent setup for a simple storage server. Just beware, age = usually less reliable and those are going to be HOT CPUs.The big issue is replacing failed components. If you are OK with those drawbacks, that is a pretty decent one.

If you purchased the server on ebay it would cost $420.00 (Cost + Shipping).

Do you really need the hot swap bays?

I went with the NORCO RPC-470 Black 4U for $90.00 (Free Shipping when I ordered last year)
It has room for 10 storage drive + 1 OS Drive + 2 Optical Drives.

Also, those older Xeons are going to use a lot more power, even at idle, then a modern C2D or i3/i5 will use. I also would worry about the PSU efficiently, as newer ones are a lot better.

Power may not be a concern at first, but it will start to add up after the server is running 24/7

It's true I don't really need the hotswap trays... That would cut the costs a little bit. If I were to buy a case only, I'll probably use my old computer as the brain of the server (old AMD Opteron).

I'll check for fixed HDD cases, thanks for the tip :)

I got a server off that guy, not that exact one but one of this rackable ones, i havent fired it up yet but he shipped fast and its extremely clean inside, no dust at all so he does a good job cleaning them, for about 50 bucks at least in the one i got, you can drop in a LV 2.8 xeon so max wattage on the chip should be about 55 watts

Overall i think its a good deal, it will use more power, and won't be as fast as a modern pc, but for media streaming i don't see why not..

BTW he seems to take some pretty low offers so you could probably still save quite abit

Price is alright. It's going to be loud as hell and power hungry though. I wouldn't use the CPUs in there as they are very old (8 years old actually, so quite slow) and will run up your power bill rather quickly.

Yeah I guess that's why they are not that expensive. Hardware is kinda old like you say...

Gonna think about it a little bit more... Thanks all for your input :)
