Used Monitors from SurplusComputers?

Would you buy a used CRT from SurplusComputer? I was looking at their 21" NEC or 20" Hitachi for around $150 shipped, 90-day warranty. The NEC was an invar shadow mask, I thought they made Sony AG type screens?

since you're unlikely to get a response here unless you're talking about the latest LCD/gaming/OC'ing gizmo, i'll cease my lurking for a moment and grant you a gem of my "wisdom".

ha.

despite the ever growing ranks of windowed-painted-lighted-gizmo'd up cases, monitors are what I end up looking at 98% of the time I'm using the computer. which given my profession is a lot. I'll break the bank in order to get quality viewing pleasure - my eyes are bad enough, I don't want to throw unnecessary eye strain on top of everything. So I spend big on the monitor, occasionally at the cost of not running the newest CPU or whatever.

Also I think it's worth noting that monitors would seem to be an item in which the standards of "refurbishment" can be applied loosley. Is some jerk on an assembly line who knows where really going to care if the monitor exhibits a slight bit of smear when approving another monitor gets his job done faster? You'll be annoyed by that smear, but by that time the company will have its money... Monitors also have a distinct lifetime to them which I doubt refurbishment really improves. I'd stay away.

Your eyes are worth it. Save up a bit more and compromise a bit on the size, you can get an awsome new 19" Trinitron that your eyes will love for a bit more cash... If you're really interested in the refurbs though, make sure the 90 day warranty (which is insanely short) will cover your shipping costs if you have to return the monitor because it doesnt meet your standards....

You can buy brand new 19's for that price, they maybe low end models but they have better warranty. If you do buy reman or refurb, check original manufact date if possible, stay away from anything over 5 years old, the tube wont last you.

i got a Dell P1110 21'' flat trinitron for 150 bucks and it was in perfect condition, so i suggest you look around more if your gonna buy a refurb monitor. I don't really like surplus computers anyways. I hope we're talking about the same place...There is one near Sunnyvale and the monitors are usually pretty bad

I was there last wensday the place is realy ghetto, but I did end up getting a mitsubishi diamond pro 900u for $130

May or may not be the same place. I looked at surpluscomputers.com. They had a decent rating at resellerating.com

I would not buy anything off of them with out seeing it first

the retail store is called softwareandstuff

well i don't have any experience w/ surpluscomputers but i did buy one 21" Nokia 445XiPlus CRT monitor from a computer liquidiation place.

I paid 300 dollars for it, and apparently they retail for a lot more? Well anyways, my friend and I both bought one. Mine's been going strong ever sense (with a slight moire problem that is common for this monitor) but my friend's goes crazy from time to time.

The thing ended up being to much for his desk, and with the jittering that it showed he ended up giving the thing to me. They are both happy on my desk and my friends only goes jittery when it's been on for to long, or gets bumped.

so it really just depends on how you treat them, and luck of the draw ;)

if you go to the actual store around the Sunnyvale area, you can try out the monitors before you buy them. I'd suggest that since Ive tryed some out and the refresh rate seems like its at 20hz :p If you go, check out the legacy section where they just have a bunch of open box parts for almost nothing. 286's for like 50 cents a pop
