Use Vidcard for Folding

On the surface it all appears to be a great idea. So far all I have seen is theory and discussion over the past two years.

I know VJ (Stanford) has looked into the idea, so far not much to be said.

Something like this would certainly help out a lot of home farmers. Everyone with a kick ass gaming card would essentially have another processor at their disposal. I don't even have a video card in the office that would be capable of folding!

My 6800GT already runs 53c at idle, I'd hate to see what temps would be folding.

It sounds like a good way of making your computer sound like and aircraft carrier, raise your heat in the case, and burn even more kilawatts. Oh well, if it were to happen, I'd be all for it though. :)

Too bad I only have a couple of machine where it would be a worthwhile upgrade though.

I don't know. I have a Silencer on my 6800OC and it runs quietly even under full load and temps are only in the high 40s. I would probably be willing to fold on it if it made sense from a PPD standpoint. The other processor that might be interesting, on this front, are the physic engines. If those were capable, you could basically set up the equivalent of a blade server in 1 box.

I wonder how many watts a video card takes at 100% load compaired to a CPU at 100% load? How this breaks down to a MFLOPS (?deally?) per watt.

I think the high end GPU versus high end CPU is getting closer, but the CPU is still running more wattage. I don't have the exact numbers, but I think a 7800GTX might be running around 100w and an AMD X2 is running around 150-180 watts under load.....

Someone might have better numbers.

Edit:

Processors:
4800+ Idle: 123w Load: 185w
FX-57: Idle: 145w Load: 204w
Intel Pentium D 840: Idle: 214w Load: 315w

GPU:

7800 GTX: 100w

Guess I was pretty close.

Yea, but how many calcuations per watt done? Or would it be the same?

Totally different

But take the graph from the study that was link and do the division....
