use tv remote on pc

hi,
i've heard u can use any regular IR remote to control a pc but u need an IR receiver for your PC. my question is... where do i buy this IR receiver? If i buy any old microsoft media centre remote, can i use its IR reciever with something like Girder or winlirc?
i would like something as cheap as possible...any links are appreciated!
btw what im looking to control are simple media apps like foobar or vlc.

I believe you could do this with either Girder or HIP. There's a learning curve with either program but since you'd be using a "regular" IR remote and not something made for a media center pc the setup will be that much more difficult. Better just drop $40 on an MCE remote and configure it with HIP to control anything. That way you get the whole package with IR receiver and blasters. I did it a couple of years ago and never regretted it.

thanks for your reply. i went ahead and ordered the mce remote for 38shipped.
ive read it can control other devices.. i hope this works for me.
