USB WIFI adapter says connected,but not

I just installed a new install of XP and a netopia USB WIFI adapter. It shows up as connected w/ "excellent" signal strength under network connections. Despite all this I can not access the internet or the router(192.168.1.100) . Also tried a linksys usb adapter with different, but still failed results. I must admidt to being at a loss, any help is appreciated

sounsd like you don't have an address via DHCP. can you post what IPCONFIG /ALL shows when you run it in the command prompt?

Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
IP Address: 192.168.1.9
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.254

The default gateway is the routers IP address. I have the settings for DHCP. Everything is set the same as a netbook I have, that has no problems.
