I recently got a USB to DVI video adapter device from microcenter. It seems like anything I do (browsing web, etc) will spike cpu to near 100% CPU usage.

Does anyone know if that is typical nature for such devices?

Are there any devices that will use less CPU usage?

I am using it with a ~2008 Macbook Pro, core 2 duo 2.4ghz, 4gb memory.

Thanks.

Nothing you do will give you great results from a device like that. USB, simply put, was never meant to handle anything like Video.

Could you clarify when you say 100% CPU usage? Is it using 100% of both cores, or just one core?

The CPU is working overtime to compress the external video feed (MPEG, H264, something). It does that to maximize the frame rates you see on the monitor connected via USB. Been there, done that. USB2 was never meant for this sort of application.

Yup, all these device adapters will eat up CPU like crazy, especially if you're trying to watch a 1080p video. Also you have an older core2duo so that might be the cause as well. I would try to get the latest drivers for better optimization. If its a chip made by displaylink I would check their website.
