I have never dealt with this before so I don't know the answer.

Will a computer boot from a USB/USB 2.0 device?
ex. cd-rom

How does that detect in the BIOS?
What BIOS settings must be made to enable that.

The reason I ask is I was thinking about building a comp with no internal optical drives. I wanted to hide the box out of site while the *-ROM and *-RW drive are easily accessible on my desk top.

I searched on google but all I came up with was a bunch of useless hardware sites.

Thanks for the help!

It should boot as long as the computer supports this in the bios. How can you tell? Well, if its not an older computer you should be ok. You just gotta cross your fingers :) Newer bios support it, so if you're packing a p43.06ghz then you should be ok, if you're running a k6-3-500 you may be introuble

You can boot from a USB device if you have a Motherboard that allows you to do so. Just got to BIOS and under Boot options, see if you can select USB.

something different...

It was just an idea that popped into my head.

Something intersting from that article...

"Current versions of Windows should not be installed to USB hard disk drives because Windows does not support USB hard disk drives as the primary boot device."

Hmm maybe the winxp product activation doesnt like being on a usb hard drive?

Woops, sorry about that one. Didn't read through the whole thing...

It's cool.

That article is exactly what I was looking for!

Now for another question

Does anyone know if there are any plans to release SATA optical drives?

I searched for that too and found a bunch of furums that discussed compatibility problems between IDE cd-roms and SATA HDs.
