I'm looking for an adapter to connect my SATA hard drive to the USB (2.0) on my laptop. Is there anything I need to know before getting one? Are they all the same?

SATA-to-USB adapters come in many shapes and sizes. HDD enclosures can also serve the same role.

How much are you looking to spend on one?

Not really looking for an enclosure. Just something to grab some files off my drive while I have my main PC apart. Looking to spend max $40

Here are two cheap options:

$15 - Vantec CB-ISATAU2 SATA/IDE-to-USB 2.0 adapter
$15 - Rosewill RX-DU101 USB 2.0 HDD docking station

That vantec adapter would be very useful for someone who does a lot of computer repairs. I might grab it. They make quality stuff, I've got a bunch of there enclosures.

After looking at both, I'm going to order the Rosewill one. It will be perfect for what I want to do.

But it looks to only support SATA (I only have SATA drives) and not IDE, am I correct?
