Hello there again guys, its 2:03 am and I am sitting here looking for some equipment. I am here to ask a favor of you guys - to help me figure out what I need.

I am about to recieve in the mail a Dell PowerEdge SC420 server, the OUTRAGEOUS deal, w00t! I am wanting to do the following - use 1 USB keyboard, and 1 USB mouse (which I have right now) to control both the SERVER I am about to get, plus my rig right now. Now I know what your thinking, KVM - wrong! See, my RIG has an X800 pro, with DVI, and the server SC420 has VGA (I bet ur still wondering). Well, I also dropped more money on the NEW Hyundai Imagequest 19" 8ms 700:1 LCD, and I have to say I am in love. So, it has a DVI and VGA connector, AND allows me to switch between the 2 if there are connections coming in to both of them - I like this feature, and not sure if this is standard or not, because this is my first LCD screen.

So needless to say, I dont need a KVM because the VIDEO is already taken care of. However, I am in need of some sort of USB switch, a device that will allow 2 devices INCOMING, and 1 device OUTGOING to each computer. I have drawn a picture and I hope you like my artistic values here:

So I hope this picture helps, and I hope you can point me in the right direction with LINKS, I would prefer NEWEGG because I am loving them right now, but if you can find other places, I will indeed look into them. Thanks for helping me in advance, and this will be for a good cause (as this server will be intended to be used for [H] members - details later!!!
 
Hi, i've had a look around, and have done in the past, and I don't think you can get them for just mouse and keyboard. Or if you can, it may be very hard to.

If I was you I would just buy a KVM switch like you said and do it that way, it would be far simpler IMO, and maybe some USB>PS2 convertors if you cannot get a USB KVM switch.

Also, with the diagram you have drawn, are you sure that you're monitor can take two different inputs simultaneously? There must be some kind of switch built into the monitor itself I believe.

That seems to be it... plug in the keyboard and mouse and leave off the video.
Still a KVM, except you're just gonna use the K&M.
 
anyone know where I can get a decent USB kvm, linkage would be nice, I dont need one to have a GREAT video thing, just the USB capabilities

Just do a search at newegg for "usb kvm" and you'll get a bunch of options in a large price range.

If you're only using the other box as a server, you could always run it headless and connect to it using realvnc or remote desktop. Since you won't be doing anything graphic intensive on it you shouldn't notice any performance problems by connecting remotely to it.
 
I second MovieMan's approach.

If you can remote in, why bother with all the extra cabling. I handle my server in this fashion. It only has 3 cables plugged in. 2 Power and one network.
