USB soundcards? comp speaker help

So heres the deal. I am in need of a soundcard and good speakers. I want to be able to hook up my bass and do electronic music. gaming is not very important to me. With that being said...the computer i have is a shuttle box and therefore has no more room for expansion (Wireless card takes up the PCI slot).

Unfortunatly I dont have very much cash but...would like decent equiptment. I had a pair a klipsch promedia 2.1'sthat I loved but couldnt take them with me when i moved.

Sooo..basically im looking for a usb soundcard (possible with 1/4" in) and speakers with nice bass response...that wont break the bank
 
well i think im gonna get another pair of promedia 2.1's....but still looking for a good usb soundcard. any ideas?
 
I personally have an Audigy 2 NX that I use for my laptop.

Don't worry about it using CPU cycles, I doubt you'll even notice it. I know I havn't.

It seems to work pretty well, however the quality of the Microphone input is very very poor for some reason. I don't know if mine is defective or not but when I tried to use the microphone input the recording quality was terrible. There was a very audible hiss. The mic input on my laptop actually records crystal clear so i've been using that for the microphone input.

The line level input seemed to work ok though. Try and buy the sound card from a place where you can exchange it if it doesn't meet your needs I think is the best advice.

The Audigy 2NX does produce decent sound for a USB soundcard though and there is no audible hiss on the outputs but keep in mind that the line level output (located on the back side of the card) does have a better S/N ration as a result of having no extra amplifcation (the headphone plug on the right side obviously has extra amplifcation).

I'd check this card out and see how you like it. If you setup a multi channel sound system sometime you will be set, not to mention the number of inputs and outputs. You get S/PDIF etc. I know there are optical ports and a digital coax port as well. It's loaded in that respect.
 
thanks guys, i actually did have an Audigy2 NX for my old lappy...but i kinda thought it sucked haha. well i may get a receiver and my shuttle has optical out...do you think that would work pretty well?
