USB postable HD diagnostics help

I am looking for a diagnostic tool to perform analysis on a 20gb portable external HD. Ive tried stuff like powermax and the like and they dont seem to be able to recognize usb HDD'S, anyone know a diagnostic tool that would run within windows that could do the trick? tnx
